just returned from a 2 1/2 week trip from Miami down to Staniel Cay in the Exumas. Here are a few notes and pictures.

Bimini
Stopped at Sea Crest in Alice Town, a better choice than Bimini Bay Mega concrete Resort at the north end since you're next to customs, close to the beach and the liquor store (Rum is half price compared to Miami...)

Free Wifi at Seacrest, although a little weak. $1 a foot...

Berry
Anchored off the beach at Chub, between the channel and the beach. good holding, deep enough and a good alternative to a $250 dockage bill.

Little Harbor Cay:
Not worth the stop despite being in all cruising guide. the "anchorage" between cabbage and LHC is too small and too shallow, the bay in front of the apparently closed Flo's is too shallow, even for a tender at low tide. we anchored off Cabbage on the west side, some surge, not that scenic. White Cay is MUCH better

Petit Cay, East beach off Great Harbor:
one of the most scenic anchorage, although exposed to the East. We were fine near the point that extends towards Petit Cay with northerly wind. Beautiful beach, plenty of water. Not listed in most guides... go figure.

Great Harbor Cay Marina: great for that out island feeling. if you want a modern, fake, concrete and plaster place, this is not for you, just stick to Disney for your vacations. $1 a ft, friendly, good docks. free wifi (although a little weak at the dock)

Nassau
Stopped at Hurricane Hole Marina, it's ok although expensive (about $4), walking distance from Atlantis. $10 a day wifi. Atlantis is jsut a little more $ although less privacy with the hords of tourists but ok for one night. fuel at hurricane hole is the cheapest i could find in Nassau, although 3.61 a gallon cant' be called cheap.

a good option to anchor out near Nassau is Rose island, off the east end... a few minutes away (obviously too far to dinghy in ) but good northerly protection.

Exumas:
The best bahamas destination in my opinion. When you consider than it's 160NM from Ft Lauderdale to Key West, and just 195NM to Normans, make that the best cruising destination in South Florida (obviously if the weather cooperates...)

dozens and dozens of places and beaches to explore.

Favorites:
Norman Cay. good anchorages, dozens of spectacular beaches and sandbars, snorkel on the ditched DC3, etc...

Warderick Wells (Exumas Park). Breathtaking is the best way to describe it... good moorings, $10 a day wifi with 100mb limit (but no cell coverage). Some surge at the larger outer moorign balls make the Emerald anchorage/mooring a better alternative on windy days, just as close to the park office. walking up to Boo Boo Hill is a must.

Samson Cay Marina:
Nice marina, modern but not over the top. the sandbars off the inner basin are spectacular. ok restaurant, not too efficient staff (made us wait for 45 minutes at the entrance to decide where to put us...). Plenty of places to explore with the tender within a 3 miles radius.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club:
More like a pirate club than a yacht club, which is good. friendly efficient management, great place although a little busy. Right across from the thunderball cave and other great places to explore with the dink.

An alternative to the Marina is anchoring out just east of the Thunderball grotto (some current but deep and good holding), pick one of the club Thunderball moorings or anchor of Big Majors(swimming pig beach), jsut around the bend. good holding and protection there.

there are many other places to anchor at and explore in the Exumas, just not enough time... I've been in many places over the years, having lived on St Barth for 13 years, from the Grenadines to the VIs and still put the Northern Exumas as the most spectacular cruising destination. Not just for the color of the water, not just for the beaches, but for the number of protected anchorages and the fact that since you can go on the bank side, you're always protected. Also in winter, being a little further SE than the northern Bahamas, the weather isn't as affected by cold fronts.

more pictures right here...

The Exhumas are great, I agree.

Did you get over to Compass Cay? You can swim with nurse sharks at the marina. A great stop between Sampson/Staniel and Warderick Wells.

BTW, Hurricane Hole is owned by Atlantis. Good burger at the Tipsy Seagull Bar there.

You're killin' me! About 30 degrees up here in the DC area...

Nice pictures though, I feel a tiny bit warmer!

Thanks for the break from snow and cold Pascal!

no, didnt' go to Compass Cay, we stopped at Sampson instead which is in a very scenic location. those sandbars off the inner basin are incredible.

plenty of nurse sharks too... dont' know about swiming with them though...

yeah, i know that Hur. Hole is now owned by Atlantis, it's almost the same price too...

Pascal thanks for the update. If we 'get it up' to run from Little Harbour down later this year this will come in very handy. The S.O. is transferring this to our guide book.
Since our water maker is now making *some* water as opposed to rated output that is drinkable we think we can swing the trip down. But looking at Passageweather.com and the predictions one has to wonder when it will ever lay down enough so we have a few days to get there and settle in at least as far as Highbourne.
We may elect to run around Abaco and down the waterway so we can cruise South in more protected waters.

Pascal,

Your photos are awesome. I noticed in one of the pics there is a Florida registered waverunner. Do you know if there is an additional entrance fee? We have thought of bringing our waverunner along to Bimini or Port Lucaya.

Dan,

Try to make it down to Staniel at least. Thunderball Grotto, Sampson Cay, dink to Compass Cay, Big Major with the Pigs, etc......

The hit Waderick Wells etc....

Such a great area to cruise and enjoy. Much better than the Abacos IMHO.

Ken

both the tender and PWC are FL registered, no issues in the bahamas, they list them on the cruising permit, no extra charge.

Dan
as mentioned, there are three things which sets the Exumas apart, besides the quality of the cruising grounds. First, being further south, fronts don't affect the weather as much as they do closer to the mainland. Two, and perhaps the most important is how most of the exumas can be accessed both from the sound and the bank side, reducing the worries about weather and taking a beating when moving around. Three, the number of possible anchorages and places to explore is incredible. just between Allen's and Staniel, there has to be at least 30 places you could stop for a day or two...

you're not that far from the Berrys, shoudln't be too hard to get a two day long window to hop over to Nassau with a stop along the way in the Berrys (either Petit Cay off GHC or White/Hoffman/devil cay). Once you're in Nassau, it's a short run to the exumas and on the bank side where weather isnt' much an issue

Yes, our goal is to get on the bank and once there we are much more comfortable. Word on the hook down here is that many wait until March for more stability in the weather and then move South. We understand Exumas is worth the effort we just have to be ready for it. There's no sense holding the bow of the boat down with a full load of water when we make the crossings so this is why the water maker has to function adequately. It's barely there now. At some point I'll discuss this. For now I would never recommend a 12v water maker to anyone.

or you can do like sailors... carry a few 5gal jugs on deck :)

i was happy about the WM working flawlessly on the last trip, even the pre filters lasted almost the entire trip... about 10 days making about 150 gallons a day. gotta love the crystal clear water down there! and the only reason that they didn't last the whole trip is that on the way back, it was very choppy off Great Harbor which stirred up some stuff in the water.

on the trip before, late nov., we caught a piece of grass in the fresh water flush check valve which prevented the low press pump from pulling water... took me a while to figure that one out, right before throwing in the towel and calling for service!

Gorgeous photos, Pascal! If you ever need crew, just call me! ;)
