I know this is a tough question but someone out there must have had a Genny refurbed in the last 10 years and have more of a clue than I do....

Looking at either buying a refurbed unit locally or getting mine redone. Westerbeke 6.5 gasser.

Anyone done one and can comment - it is actually low hours according to meter (600 hrs) but who knows.

What work does it need? Low hours on a genset is NOT good
 
My understanding is that it has to be taken apart to find out what it needs. Refurb units around here with warranty seem to be in the $2k-3k range so wonder if it isnt more expedient and less hassle to go zero hour refurb.
 
Is the engine not running, or is it running, but not putting out current?
 
It starts and runs but there is a loud knock....dropped a valve? Also very inconsistent from a running perspective - had weird shut downs, fuel deliver issues (flaky pump), and some of the wear out items (pumps, belts, governer, points need refreshes).
 
I guess that's an oldy. If runs and puts out with 600 Hrs is good concerning about the knock have some body to check the gap on valves first. Refurb I don't think it's necessary unless the knock is caused by a loose piston which I don't think so. And will be EXPENSIVE.
 
I think the boys and I are going to pull it and bring it to the local westerbeke dude - got referal from a Boatered regular and will see what they say.

Be easier to have identical unit go back in

They were great to me. The fellow returned my call from an airport enroute to a business trip. A fellow on a Sea Ray site told Kismet his issues and the fellow told the boat owner to try "xyz" and get back with the results before proceeding to pull the Gennie. "xyz" fixed the problem.
