The operator's manual for my VP 5.0 MPI engines says "CAUTION! Do not use deep cycle batteries on EFI engines. A deep cycle battery, while it may have enough cold cranking amps (CCA), will cause problems with EFI engines. The correct starting battery for all Volvo Penta EFI engines is a standard marine battery with a minimum of 650 CCA and a minimum of 135 reserve minutes capacity."
Does anyone know why these batteries will cause "problems"? VP does not elaborate. My only guess is that the deep cycle batteries have higher internal resistance and therefore may drop to lower voltage during high-load starting that could cause fuel injection computer problems.
