I have 2 90 amp Leece-Neville alternators and 3 batteries. The alternators are not orginal equipment and are too large for the original battery isolator (70 amp max). Therefore the previous owner "simply" cut the wires to the isolator and wired the alternator to charge only the start battery for the engine. The house battery can only be charged by the battery charger with either shore power or the generator. I want to add a battery isolator that can handle the 90 amps and charge all batteries when running the engines.
When sizing the wire to run from the isolator to the house battery, should I size it for 180 amp? Will the isolator combine the output of both alternators and send 180 amps to the house bank to charge it?
At some point, I want to replace the house battery with a bank of deep cycle batteries to power an invertor. Seems like these 90 amp alternators might come in handy for recharging the house bank.
