I had not heard about this. We drove into the City Friday night and they were on. They must have been testing them on Saturday becasue the grand lighting ceremony is tonight. It is pretty cool - ever changing patterns. According to the website, the patterns never repeat

Yeah, another sight to see during the America's Cup. I'm sure it will be quite the show!

I've only seen it on the news these past few days, but my son was doing a shoot in the City over the past few days and saw some of the testing that was going on. He said that it was very cool.

Personally, I think it is a waste of money. A bridge is a bridge. Just like I feel that the fancy new east span is a MAJOR waste of money.

But hey, that is just me.

And don't get me started on that other waste of money for the opening of the bridge. Five and a half million of taxpayer/tollpayer money. Just ridiculous.

I fail to see any reason for celebrating such a failure of a project. Especially such an unneccesary one. There is nothing to celebrate. Open the darn thing and be done with it.

At least the light project is privately funded!

Well that's good to hear. I hope the people that paid for it enjoy it. And I'm sure they will.

The replacement of the east span was necessary, the old one was worn out and not earthquake proof. You may recall it had a deck collapse in the 1989 quake. It couldn't be rebuilt economically, not to mention you'd have to shut it down to do so. Also, the bridge is primarily funded by tolls and bonds paid by tolls.

I applaud the new, improved bridge span and the light show! The Bay Area didn't deserve that ugly old bridge!

Yeah, I recall the '89 quake and the one and only section of the entire span that let loose on one end to the deck below. I was at the Sea Ray service center in San Leandro when it hit. What a ride!

If you recall the news after that, they kept showing a small compact red car with its flashers on, dangling over the edge of the section that dropped. The owner of that car was the sister of a co-worker of mine at the time. She was on her way to get her marriage license. With an omen like that, I wonder how her marriage is going??? ;)

Anyway, I had a contact at the Daily Review in Hayward that asked me if I would take a few reporters out on the water so they could take some pics and video's of the damage. I gladly complied. Of course, the CG had other ideas, but the mission was a success.

And there is no guarantee that this new span will survive a big quake. No bridge is "earthquake proof". And what about the west span. I bet that after all the fiasco of the east span (and it isn't over yet), no one wants to step up and get that project going. But isn't it necessary? Replacing the east span supposedly was... [?]

And I still don't see any reason to blow almost six million on a party to celebrate such an embarrassment of a project.
