it's been quiet in here, what are you all up to ?

we went out for the fireworks at bayside last night, had a blast despite a wet start in the late afternoon. who went out ?

it was nice... not as many boats as usual because of the weather but the evening turned out to be real nice. Saw Mario and his gang on his 34' hatt... looked like the party was on... what a great boat ! 40 years old yet more room than any modern boat and good looking lines !

we got back in pretty late, around midnight, enjoying a calm ride on the bay, stars and the orangy moon rising behind the clouds...

on the way, we had picked up a friend of ours at the marina (rickenbacker)... Mario if you read this you got to ask Angela about her latest on board made ice cream... blueberry cheese cake !!! we pulled up by her boat (58 hatt) to drop her off and she served it... delicious !!

this is what boating is all about..

so who else went out ?

We left Pelican Harbor marina arour 11 am and headed out to NNH thinking that I would be lucky to find space. Much to my surprise there was plenty of room. It stayed that way untill later in the afternoon when a whole bunch of boats started to come in ahead of the bad weather. Like usual, there where a few crazies out on the water that by their actions put other peoples lives at risk. All in all, it was a nice day, good food, drinks and friends.

I went to Sands Key around 1pm and the thunderstorms finally hit us around 4pm. There was a huge crowd there on the sandbar, with boats still coming just as the bad weather started. My initial intention was to go to Bayside and watch the fireworks, sleep over, then head back to Blackpoint early morning. After that storm, I decided to scrap that plan, as I wasn't sure how long it would keep up. I had a nice few hours on the sandbar though. One of the few times I didn't take digital camera or camcorder.

BTW, Pascal! Do you still have that map of how to get into NNH?

We let loose the lines at 19:00 hrs, under a light drizzle from Boynton Beach and choose to have a nice quiet dinner at "Georges" before the din began . There were plenty of Sheriff boats on patrol around Lantanna, Delray & Boynton Beach keeping boats operating at safe speeds with RUNNING LIGHTS and away from the barges.

We decided to make fast up at Ocean Front Park at there "Day Pier" to enjoy the 3 areas of Fire Works that were visible in front of us and hooked up with some friends who also were tied up at the pier.
We all enjoyed the shows along with later watching TV on board of our Nations Capitols 4th July celebration.
With all honesty I must commend our water Law Enforcement personal for making this holiday a safe one. Maybe the weather helped them also.

I have attended past parties on the 4th in these waters and watched in fear of boats running full speed with no lights shooting off flares and rockets from small GAS boats with no concept of the danger that they placed on them selfs and all the surrounding boats.
......Enough....

Secured the boat and made it home before midnight, very tired after a full wonderful evening, we then had our celebratory cocktail.

watched the fireworks from my hot tub since the beast broke again - nice fireworks this year.

the red line shows approach from the ocean but it's easy to spot the route from the bay

here is a link to a Google file with plenty of placemarks for the bay and keys

Pascal ol'Man, You have opened up new horizons for moi, with that " Good Earth "Site ...
I've been way out of the loop...
thank you!
P.S. If it only plotted marine navigation courses then our boating life would be a real breeze...

i really like Google earth, it's a great tool. you can also use it on your internet enabled cell phone, it's nice to get directions. www.google.com/gmm on your cel, works on most phones with browsers

this file is identical but has a few charts overlayed on the sat pix... unfortunately it takes a while to capture the charts to an image format and the file gets a little large.. but it's a nice tool

I spent the 4th of July changing an injector line in a lively Bahamian Port.

dont' complain... you could have been changing offshore ! :-)

It wouldn't have been the first time. There's something to be said for self sufficiency. :)

I planned to go to Miami, but on my way to the intercoastal (2 minutes after I left), the engine quit. I tried to start but I could hear some strange noise from inside of the engine. When I opened my engine compartment, I saw rust around one of the risers and a yellow line coming down. I just had both risers and manifold replaced when I replaced my head cylinders. I wonder if the mechanic did not install the gasket properly and water got in the engine. I am not sure yet but I am waiting for the mechanic to come check it out. ouch!

And if this was not bad enough, I put my anchor on the dania canal waiting for Towboat US. Each passing boat would make wakes that would send my boat against the rocks on the side of the canal. I have both the wife and my son on the bow making signs for the boats to slow down. Out of about 30 boats, 2 slowed down and only one came by to ask if we needed help.

Not a good 4th July for sure.

yikes sorry to hear that ! cant' believe no one stopped to help.. I've given quick tows to people in the past.

did you check the oil after the failure ? what does it look like ?

Harry I feel your pain! Been there!
Always use VHF FM CH 9 & 16 with a "security call" stating that your vessel is in a dangerous position and that all vessels transiting your location(Area) should pass with no wake. It may help!
Persons who don't have a clue will still abuse the "rules" and common nautical sense. With family aboard, I think I would act somewhat more severe, but that me! If I thought that my vessel was in imminent danger then I would call the USCG asap.

Your washers should fly out today.

Sorry to hear about your probs Nauti....battling a gremlin right now myself.

Chas- got to tell ya that down here in SE Florida, the percentage of people who have their radios on is very small. Trying to notify a boat near you that your intentions are to go to their port or starboard side, or even to tell them they have a line in the water or a ladder down NEVER works here. Either they dont have them or they never think to turn them on....kaos. Wish your way did work around here.

Thanks Pascal!

Hey Harry, sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope the mechanic warranties his work.

Thanks guys.
I posted the following message on the mechanic forum, hope someone may have a clue:

I have a 2001 5.7 carbed Volvo. I just did major work changing both head cylinders, manifolds and risers. We also rebuilt the carb and changed the water pump. After the job, I took the boat out 5 times without problem.
Last week, we started the engine without incident and ran 5 minutes on idle on a canal. I had to stop for a minute so I turned the engine off for a minute. When I tried to restart it, the engine would not start and was making weird noise as I tried to start it. I tried a few times and gave up. I thought it was the flywheel or the crankshaft.
When the mechanic came today, he found water on all 8 spark plugs. However, there is no water in the oil. The stick came out nice with oil only. The water separator was pulled out and no water in it, so it’s not bad gas. We cleaned the spark plugs and tried to start again. Engine would not start. Pulled the sparks again, they are full of water.
Anybody has any idea what could have happened? I really have no clue and feel my mechanic does not have a clue either.

the only way for water to get in is thru the manifold and risers...

if both sides were done (heads, man / risers) then it's impossible to blame a defective part, i'd worry about the gaskets that he used.

no water in oil is good, but water in the cyl will affect the cyl, rings, valves, etc... it's imperative to soak some oil in there to limit damage.

I hope your mechanic will stand behind his work...
