whats the best thing to use on threaded
plumbing fittings--(thru-hull valves to barbed elbow)
teflon tape??
maybe some 5200??
or other bedding compound?

On the threads, I would use Teflon or pipe dope. I would not use 5200.

I'd use 3M 101 or 4200 or 5200 on the hull/thru-hull joint.

5200??? if you dont want to take the thing apart... Teflon never hurts.

couldn't get the last one/original one apart either.... (to re-use the elbow)----had to buy a new elbow![:-banghead]

IMO new parts are always better. Pipe threads distort on tightening and may not seal properly again. Boat yards replace everything because it is the correct process and results in fewer problems.

Teflon is good for water, but not on gas or diesel.
You can also use a good pipe dope.
