I have two lights on a panel inside the bathroom, a yellow and a red.. Dealer told me yellow means black water tank is 1/2 full and red means it's full, don't even THINK about flushing again.. We have now overnighted twice and the wife is constantly using the head.. I rigged up my own pump out system with a 12v jabsco mascerator and the appropriate hoses and fittings, I pump out into a 25 gallon honey wagon and that is easily dumped since we have septic at home instead of public sewer.. Nowhere can I find the capacity of the blackwater tank on the boat.. but when I pump it out, I'd say I'm getting a good 15 gallons or maybe even 20.. This is a jabsco raw water electric flush head.. Can I just flush fresh water down it on dry land to see if the yellow light comes on?.. Is it POSSIBLE I have HUGE holding tank of 30-40 gallons?.. This is a 2007 Glastron GS-259.. I don't want to flush fresh water and get a big surprise when I find out the tank level lights are NOT working...

TIC, if your holding tank is rectangular, and you can get near it, measure it. Length X width X height (in inches) divided by 231 will give you the approximate capacity of the tank in gallons. I always figure a gallon or two less, to allow for the wall thickness of the tank, and any fitttings that may be extending into the tank, taking away some of the tank's capacity. However, if the tank isn't rectangular, the formula doesn't work.

And yes, you can flush fresh water through the toilet to fill the tank while on land, to see where the warning lights come on, but don't allow the toilet's motor to overheat and burn itself out. They aren't intended for continuous duty. When the motor gets good and hot to the touch, stop and wait until it cools back down, before starting it up again.

you can just fill the tank from a hose via the pumpout as well. It is not uncommon for those float gages to stick. A good flushing and sloshing around some deturgent in a partially filled tank may help.

I called my dealer and he said I had an 8 gallon holding tank??... I find this hard to believe, either that or the float doesn't work.. I like the idea of filling from the pump out fitting and will fill it a gallon at a time to measure quantity and check to see if I can get the indicator lights to come on.There is no easy access to the tank itself. It IS a good thing that we can just bump the flush button to empty the bowl instead of doing a full water flush each time the head is used. My wife is agreeable to this procedure and last flush of the day will always be a long one followed by a pump out back at home.

if is on a trailer add some fresh water, 1/2 full and drive around for a while. I use a little dish detergent too then flush the tank several times.

I understand the reason to drive around a little, but that'll cost me a bunch of money. LOL... The first time I pumped it out, we rinsed it afterwards. Maybe I'll just drive up and down the driveway a little and hit the brakes a lot..

I add Calgon water softener to the tank after I empty it. I cleans the tank and keeps the smell away.

Well, sure enough, my half full float switch was stuck.. I filled the tank from the outside of the boat. (it holds approx.l0 gallons). When it started to come out the vent I stopped and went inside the boat. I only had a red light which signifies a full tank.. I used my little 12v jabsco maserator pump and fittings/hoses to drain the tank again, totally filled and flushed it again. Next time after putting in approx. 5 gallons of water I went inside the boat and had an orange light. This signifies tank half full.. I continued to fill from the outside until I was up to the vent again and went back inside the boat and both red and orange lights were lit... I think some toilet paper (yes, I use the camper/marine grade stuff) must have been hung up on the float.. I KNEW there had to be a problem because the wife pee's constantly and I've been pumping out a lot of liquid but have never seen the half full light indicator (Orange) come on... So rinsing the tank really pays off.... thanks for the advice, I never even thought of filling it from the pump out fitting. Anything I can do to prevent this float from jamming up again besides repeat rinse jobs?
