Poof! We better be careful around Dave with his new magic powers! Now if he (or anyone else for that matter) could only zap sense into the heads of wayward humans, there would be a lot less work for November Charlie and our tax dollars to do.

If there's a lot of interest in Block Island, why don't you guys organize a trip...
 
Been there done that. You should go though, it is fun to do stuff on your own without any help IMHO.

You and you wife will get more much of a feeling of accomplishment that way, rather than just following the boat in front of you. I'd wait a year or two until you (and your wife!!!!) are really comfortable with your boat in inshore waters, before tackling the conditions we discussed at length in the other thread.

The worst thing to do is take your newbie boating wife into even moderate sea conditions, and she is too scared to ever get back on the boat again. That happens a lot.

A slow introduction into progressively more challenging boating conditions is the best way to keep your wife an enthusiastic boating partner. That is the most important thing to gain by waiting a couple of seasons for Block.

You will have lots of fun with your boat locally, so why bother to tackle big sea journeys right away? Once you are experienced with the local stuff and a bit bored, THEN is the time for longer trips. You will have the skills to make the trip a lot more fun, rather than a scary journey or a yelling match with your frightened wife the whole time.
 
I agree with Chris, take it one step at a time.

Dave and I and a few other boats are doing a trip at the end of June, if you are intrested let me know.

Sure I'd be interested! A couple buddies and I could meet you at your marina and then head on over to Block Island. Would you turn around and come home the same day? I'm not interested in staying at Block overnight, as the weather might change and I'd be stuck there.
 
And things were going so well....Walter, looks like you have a new boating buddy from PA!

Seems he REALLY liked your advice, likely the part about you hoping to modify your boat into a bow rider, halfway to Block Island in heavy seas. The "Silverton snap", as known in the Bond films to improve seaworthiness, and outrace the Coast Guard. Kind of like the yacht in Thunderball.

Hint: in many Poker runs, all boats below 25 feet in length are banned from participating. Most people accept that, as they know the organizers have their best interests at heart. There are legal issues as well.

Bob, what’s inappropriate is call someone who expresses concern for your welfare, as well as that of your family’s, a douche-bag- like you did in your PM to me
And I suggest you rethink your actions on this internet thing because you’re not at invisible as you may think.

Question for all... is it common practice to hook up with people leaving Block and heading back to Montauk or other LI ports? I think I would prefer to do something like that then try it by myself the first time.

I never said I was invisible, quite the contrary, actually. I've said before, go to google and type in blouderback, you'll probably get my home address, cell and home phone number, birthday, wife and kids names, the church I belong to, company I work for, etc. I think people who post in anonymity are cowards. I'm not afraid to let people know who I am.

My PMs to you and others were in response to your sarcastic and down-right mean spirited comments to my honest question. I chose to do it as a Private Message to keep it PRIVATE, you chose to make it public.
 
Holy Grail, one way is to find out from the dock office who is leaving the next morning and where they are planning to go. They may know, they may not.

If they do, bring a couple of adult beverages with you as a peace offering and visit a few cruisers, asking nicely if they would mind if you ran with them, asking what speed they prefer to travel at and when are they leaving. Be sure to be ready AHEAD of time in the morning.

99% of cruisers are more than happy to help people who are actually interested in listening to their advice.
 
So let me see if I understand. Bob asks a question and gets much good advice from many experienced boaters in that area. Because Bob, does not like the advice (maybe not what he wnated to hear) he presses on inisiting his plan is sound. The post then turns to a sarcastic and humorous nature.

So because people tell bob that his boat and experience level do not warrant a trip to Block Island they are ass-holes, douche-bags, and jerks?

Is this a fair summary?
