Word of warning!!! Two major break ins have been reported at Willow Cove Marina in the last week. One of those being my boat. I know there is no way to prevent them, but it just burns my butt that some low life singled out my boat to kick in the sliding glass door to the salon to gain entry. Just be aware.

Did you have the police stop yesterday. We has a car stop by not sure were willow cove was. She said they had a call from there. If not it may have been #3...

Really sorry to hear that annamorgan. I hope the damage and loss was not too bad. I have mixed feelings about the electric gate they have but I guess it's time they start using it.

I found the break in on Saturday. The damage is limited to the sliding glass door to my salon. First they tried to punch out the lock, when that failed they tried to prior open the door and when that failed they kicked in the lower glass panel to the dor. A real mess.

Regal wants almost $12,000 for a replacement door on my boat. That would REALLY SUCK!

Sounds like things could have been worse for you, hate to say you were lucky but it seems that way!

It would be cheaper to leave the door unlocked

It just seem's like the money we pay for storage we should not have to worry about security. It's suppose to be a locked yard and that's what we are paying for, and if the gates don't work then hire a security company for the area. Also the marina's should be responsible that's why they have liab. insurance. (lawyer time in my opinion)

Hate to say it Todd but the slip agreement specifically lets them off the hook. Doesn't mean one can't go after a marina but I'd imagine it makes it harder to do so.

Security..what a joke. An electric gate that doesn't close and the marina's idea of security is a guy that doesn't come out of his apartment until the sun rises. We have spoken to the owner for years about security, especially since the last series of boat break in's w/o anything being done. During the summer strange cars enter the yard at all hours drive around and leave. Guess how that makes you feel.

John last year when radar was damaged by lift, the marina did pay for it.
Even if I put in my contracts that I'm not responsible for damage in homes does not let me off the hook. Every Buis has to have liab ins for that reason and it doesn't matter what's in your contract. If it was that easy to get off from having to pay for stolen or damaged property every buis would put that in their contracts.

You are right Todd, no matter what it says, it does not completely absolve them from liability. The problem is that it might cost you more to litigate than the claim is worth. That's what insurance is for...

The boaters there need to unite and go to the owner and DEMAND better security.

Mike is right on two counts.
1- Don't lock your door, I never do, the damage they do busting in is usually less than what the will steal.
2- It will more than likely cost you more to litigate.

Todd,
We have a security guard in our marina, problem is he can't be everywhere at the same time, so that is not the answer. We have a few break- ins a year (529 slips)

IMHO
CCTV cameras, recorder and signs are the best deterrent. CCTV won't stop the break-ins i but it will catch the perps.

Sorry to here of your loss, sucks!!!!

A marina causing damage with a lift is very different from someone breaking into your boat. I'm not a lawyer, thats Hogan's job, but unless one can prove that the marina's negligence caused the break-in to occur you will have an uphill battle.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Please report it to HRBYC association, they monitor these things. We had a break-in two years ago, they didn't get anything because the guy was sleeping on his boat and startled the punk.

Since then, last year I installed a CCTV and put locks at the rows to our docks. This year I need to "polish up" the install:
- Need to guarantee 30 days of video storage
- Need to put the gate system on a timer
- Move camera angles, install more cameras, etc.
- We currently have seven cameras. Oh and if someone wants to tempt fate, we also have the local head of police and judge as a members with a few other police officers as associates.

With Seaweed making a quick getaway, how many are actually left to complain!!!

I'd heard that last years breakin's were done by local kids scaling the back fence. Short of electrifying the fence or rolls of barbed wire what else can you do?

I like Walter's idea of cameras so at least you can catch the little creeps but it is still after the fact.

BTW - we are talking about a winter storage problem right? With the exception of the drunken revelers that came in from across the street and attempted a joy ride with a boat on G dock has summer thefts even been an issue?

Man that really burns me to hear that so many boats get robbed,I have had various construction equpt. stolen over the years at job sites where no one is around at night, but always thought the marinas were kinda safe , guess i'm wrong & sorry to hear it.
Us boaters need to stick together on this one .Maybe if we try to keep an eye out for each other a bit more this year it may help, seems like there is always a few of us around, just a reminder. I hope were doing that anyway.
To bad we can't string them in a cage from the yard-arm like they did in the old days, betcha we wouldn't need a gate or locks anymore.... jon
