Did anyone else see and hear the boat explosion on Saturday morning about 10 a.m. right next to the Riverwatch restaurant on Middle River?

I was outside our boat and heard this load concussion. Next there was this huge billowing of black smoke at Riverwatch. The smoke lasted quite a while and we heard all sorts of sirens blaring.

We left our slip around 10:30 and rode past the incident. It looked like about a 35 foot express cruiser had the entire cockpit area charred. The hull was black to almost the waterline in that area.

We didn't hear any reports of what happened or whether or not anyone was hurt.

One can only guess that it didn't pass the sniff test.

I didn't hear the explosion, as I was in the shower at Riverwatch when it started. When I came out, the smoke was just starting to get heavy. Within 15 minutes it was all over and the entire boat from the windshield back was a crater. Rumor at the docks was that it was a 46' or 50' SunDancer. It was hauled out and on the dry by 11:00 AM. VERY sad to watch. We got dozens of pictures, but left our camera on the boat. The whole incident reminded us to review our disaster and emergency plans....

C Spray,

Any word on injuries or what caused it?

I'd love to hear what happened. I always try to get the family off the boat when refueling, but have to admit that sometimes I let them hang around. If this was fueling-related, it will help me convince them to get off.

As I understand it (not familiar with the area), the boat was at Markley's Marina. The dock did not appear to have power or water. I get the impression that the TraveLift had just put it in the water, as it was in the area of the launching well. I did not get the impression that anyone was on board. Didn't see any fuel pumps nearby. Actually, it looked big enough to be a diesel boat. I'm surpised that there was nothing in the local papers - there was LOTS of smoke and flame when it was at the peak of the fire.
