I am in the process of renaming my boat. I had a partner for ten years who liked a name I didn't particulary care for and once I hought him our, I have to come up with something more suitable. My thought is that family ski boats tend to have cutsy or play on word type names and that is not my cup of tea. Serious fishing or working boats tend to have more mature names. Its like a serious fishing boat with the name of "poopsy II" or something equally silly or a family ski boat with the name "Nora Ann" Is there any sense to this as I seem to be somewhere in the middle. I am a serious fisherman on a 24ft Trophy that we fish all over Monterey Bay with and also spend a lot of time in the Delta. I know a name is a very personal thing but would like to hear what you folks think about the naming protocol.

I've never been much for protocol...

I name things what I like to name them.

And don't worry about a fancy shmancy "re-naming" ceremony complete with chants.

Unless you want to look like a newbie... [:-captain]

Good luck!

BAB,

I agree with naming a boat whatever you like, but the renaming ceremonies can be a lot of fun and a good excuse for a party. Don't have to be mistaken for a newbie, you can just be someone that refuses to grow up and likes to have fun. That being said, we never did the renaming ceremony, but I regret it somewhat.

I agree with Absoloot. Renaming ceremonies can be lots of fun. We had 23 people on our boat for the festivities!

There are many variations of ceremonies out there on the 'net, so we mixed and matched until we got what we wanted. The toughest part in CA is finding a virgin to pee in your bilge. We had to settle for a spayed dog. ;-)

Boat names should be very personal and related to you and/or your interests! My son renamed my boat "Dora Dee" which is pronounced almost like his last name, Doherty. To each his own!

The first word is the name of the woman you love the most. The second word is the name of her favorite chocolate candy. Or vis veras. Godiva Jean is a good example. Brandi Snickers. Hilery Heath. Rocky Road Ronda is a little tough on a boat.

or Martini Mary? Use FindMe's idea, but substitute favorite drink for chocolate.

My first boat's name was Butterfly 'cause a beautiful white butterfly landed on the boat the first day I took her out and just before we christened her. And I love butterflies, so I thought that was a good omen!

My second boat was named Flutterby because I didn't want "Butterfly II", but wanted to continue with the omen in some small way. The logo in my head was a Monarch Butterfly holding a glass of champagne and looking "tipsy".....

I whole heartedly support Flutterby's idea to switch from chocolate to liquor, if we are talking about power boats here...
Everyone knows that candy is dandy but liquor is quicker...

I had a friend who named his boat after a woman who his wife didn't know about, and she endorsed the idea. His sailboat is named "Ilean".

And of course my boat name "Find Me" is no where to be found..
