The late 60's to early 70's was when they went from wood to glass but if you do a search there are plenty of the older wooden boats around. I'm sure the late 70's is glass and Chris Craft was top builder for decades so also a top of the line boat. The age of the boat tells you it's well constructed because if it was junk it would be landfill material by now. It's up to you and a good surveyor to determine the boats condition but if it passes the survey go for it.

Hello Billy,
I noticed you also visit the BOC site - there is a real active member their named Doug who owned one of these for many years and can comment on them first hand. He is a hands on guy who would have done much of the work himself and therefore will know a good deal about the boats. Perhaps post for him over there and see if he can help.

A friend had a Chris Craft from that era. Determine the weight and you'll probably be shocked at how overbuilt this thing is. According to him, the were not sure how strong fiberglass really was so the boat was over-engineered.

While blistering was a huge Uniflyte issue due to their fire retardant glass, she should be looked at closely as it shows up sporadically with other boats from that era. Otherwise they are known as solid boats. If maintained, the detroits will be bullet-proof. Especially if they are naturals.

The bottom is clean and has been barrier coated. Could be an issue in time,but not now. The diesels are naturals and it seems the owner is very hands on with the maintenance of them. I will have them checked out of course.

I was brought up on a 1901 sloop and a 1942 Alden schooner, as well as rowboats etc... There is no way unless I could afford to pay someone to maintain it would I own a wood boat.
