Boat sinks - Montauk inlet

Must have have had his electrnics on full bright and a bunch of lights on the FB not to see that jetty.

Probably steering via GPS or Autopilot. Either that or his wife was giving him an earful for missing it in the first place (distraction).

I've done that inlet a dozen times with my buddy but only once at night. I'm thinking the captain wasn't familiar with the inlet? It's wide enough for big boat traffic in both directions. The jetties are on both sides and you just go down the middle. Last night was clear on the south shore but I have no idea what it was like in Montauk?

His day didn't start out well...he should have probably turned around after having to wait for the tide in Moriches

Whole different world out there at night

Wow - I wonder who this guy was if he came thru moriches.
Anyone catch boat name?

Wow. Is Moriches that difficult to navigate? It looks like he stuck it good.

Holed where I can't see? What's future of one like that? I helped refloat two twin OBs and we had one running by noon. Both still came up junk.

This is the same boat that sunk in Montauk?? His running gear was ok to continue on after a grounding like that in Moriches earlier in the day??

Yep. He got lucky the first time he wasnt paying attention to the markers...not so much the second time.

I saw them lifting the boat today. What a mess after sitting under water for 2+ days.

BTW, I heard he just bought the boat a few weeks ago from Marine Max. I guess he didnt have any $$ left over to hire a captain for some training.

Heard he was traveling with Marine Max on annual outing. My buddy, who's at Montauk Yacht club, said he asked for a refund and the marina said no!

It figures. New boater. Tons of cash, no experience.

Yep, that sounds like MYC

I heard some insurance companies require a captain on new Boats

See guys like this ruin it for us good boaters.

Running aground in Morioches isn't that difficult to do; but running aground that far up on the sandbar means he was going too fast in waters he didn't know. Some training with a captain/teacher and more experience with his boat and electronics could have prevented both incidents. A sorry situation. Before I went from a single engine I/O 24' Chaparrel to a twin engine 33' inboard Cruisers, I spent a day on the water with a certified captain learning how to handle the boat and how to use the electronics it had. I've been boating for over 60 years and still considered myself a novice with that type of boat. The only good news is that nobody was injured or killed. Hy

Surprised that he wasn’t following other boats if it was an outing.
I guess anyone could get disoriented a bit in strange waters. I’ve been boating for a long time and I still get a little bit nervous going in and out of strange places.
From what I hear and read about Moriches, it sounds like anyone could wind up aground there. That’s why I’m avoiding it.
Not familiar with Montauk by water, but thinking maybe the weather got ugly and maybe he lost sight of the buoys or something.
Hopefully the only injury was to his pride.
