Getting ready to wax/polish for the first time. Out boat is an '89, it doesn't look too bad but shows it's age in some places. There is some oxidation is some spots. Want to get a good coat of wax on it before the Seattle winter (i.e. rain) sets in.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Go to the Marine detailing section and read the many threads there regarding waxing and polishing. If you don't see your answers there, ask again as this really isn't a Carver issue.

I learned a trick from another boater for the oxidation. Grab a can of "Penetrol", should be able to find it at Menard's or Home Depot or some place like that. It says right on the back, great for reconditioning fiberglass on boats. You will want to work it in small sections at a time, but you put it on with a rag, then in 5 minutes buff it out. Takes the oxidation out and gives you a really nice shine. Then I put a nice wax on it and good to go. Really good for bringing out the color in any striping (not the vinyl stuff) but works on the while of your hull too.

Penetrol and other solvents are a quick temporary fix. The oxidation will return quickly. If oxidized, you need to compound those areas with a ROTARY buffer and then wax. Won't hurt to put a coat of wax on now and then compound and wax in the spring.

From what I read, Penatrol is a chemical compounding product that too many incorrectly use as an end all. I was under the impression Penatrol was to remove oxidation, then you could do a light compound, polish and then wax.

However, as has been discussed here before. Buff Magic and Pro Polish or Rejex and Polish are proven methods.

Sometimes there are no shortcuts.

My 2 cents.

I use the "leverage Polish" family of products on my boats. They are Carnuba Wax FREE!!! Very happy with the result and ongoing maintance and touch up is much quicker :)
