Hi All

Been out of the game for a year..
Can anyone give me some info on this course I need to take..

There's been some other threads on this subject. while new, the requirements are changing as laws are superseded by higher authority.

New York State Boating Safety Certificate

Its an 8hr course and short test.
 
I'm as confused as you are and I think I might wait it out, but there is a forum third down from the top licensing etc, and there you might get your answer.

Not sure why everyone is so confused.
Law is plain and clear!
Take the boating course, it gets you a jetski license as well!
They are given at adult ed places as well as by USPS and USCG.
I have mine that I took years ago!
I know a guy I met at watch hill who offered to shrink the 8 hours down for boaters he knows, I will see if I can locate him and let everyone know.
Maybe meet at a bar one night and he will knight everyone!

Boating Safety Law, The new Suffolk County Boating Safety Law will take effect November 6, 2013. The Boating Safety Law will apply to all Suffolk County Residents who operate a boating vessel.
(A)"No resident of Suffolk County shall operate a pleasure vessel upon the waters of Suffolk County unless the operator is the holder of a boating safety certificate issued by the Commission of the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary; or by any other entity that offers a boating course that meets the standards set by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators."
(B)"All residents of Suffolk County operating a pleasure vessel upon the waters of Suffolk County shall maintain their boating safety certificate on board their vessel during all periods of operation."

The Suffolk County law will only be effective until May 1, 2014, in and only in Suffolk County and only if you are a Suffolk County resident. (You have to have a certificate on board showing you took an approved boating safety course.)
On May 1, 2014 the New York State Law takes effect and will supersede the Suffolk County law. The New York State Law will require that all persons born on or after 5/1/96 successfully complete an approved course in boater safety in order to operate a motorboat.
Again, you must carry the certificate on board.
 
When does the state law go into effect which will supersede the Suffolk law and be fazed in over time?

So that means I will be illegally operating my boat for another month and a half.

Strongly suggest you mark out a day and take a classroom boating course. One such is About Boating Safely, put on by CGAUX. The USPS puts on the same course under a different name. Regardless of your boating experience, I promise you will learn something new and useful. I'm the education officer for our CGAUX unit. We've had long term boaters, owners of 65-ft yachts, commercial tug operators, and I've heard time after time "I never knew that," "I forgot about that," and so on.
Yes you can take an online course and "get your ticket punched" but why not actually gain something?
Whatever you choose, be sure it's NASBLA (National Assoc of Boating Law Admins) approved. Should be reciprocal to other states. Also, NY State will now have a record of your course completion. If they process like FL, they can replace your card if lost and you can furnish Name and Course Date.
 
As a member of the Great South Bay Power Squadron (GSBPS) I can strongly recommend the United States Power Squadron (USPS) courses.
That said, in order to comply with the 8 hours of training needed for certification, the public boating course covers just the basic fundamentals. Once you pass that course if you're really interested in learning and furthering your boating education you should join the US Power Squadron chapter in your area. Of course I recommend the GSBPS.

So that means, after May 1st, and if born after 1996, your good to go without this bullsh$it course?
 
Yes Walter, now you're not confused either.

I've been meaning to get a Chapmans for a while now and ordered one over the weekend. This boat course discussion has had a positive effect on one of us.

I have one of those books that was given to me when I bought my 2004 Silverton, Sadly, I never even cracked a page:(
