I was at a Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA) hearing yesterday and noticed under Agenda Item 9 (Legislative Framework...) a pargraph entitled "Support from Boaters Using the Waterways of the Delta and the SRFCP [Sacramento River Flood Control Project]". The paragraph states, amongst other things, that "Because of the detrimental impact of boat wakes on these systems, it is reasonable to expect boaters to contribute to the cost of channel and bank improvements needed to maintain these systems".
Reading that I was reminded of toll booths and turnpikes in the State of New York. What do the law makers have up their sleeves? Are they totally disregarding that we are paying fuel taxes for maintenance of highways every time we fill up our gas-guzzling boats? How about using some of those taxes that boaters already pay for this type of needed waterway maintenance? I don't know about you, but this has me a bit 'steamed'.
