Bored

My days of exploring canals ended when I moved to inboard boats! Even some of the larger ones have unmarked shallow spots.
 
Canal has gotten much worse. You are definitely gonna touch no matter where you go in it at anything close to low tide. Good news is that it is just soft mud stuff.

Smugglers is a great spot, but the neighbors are putting tremendous pressure on the Town of OB to close it down. I never get that... you buy a home near a restaurant and pay less because of it, but you complain cause the restaurant is doing business! I do know that Smugglers packed in too many people compared to their occupancy rating so they have pulled way back. Too bad. Their food is awesome.
 
By the way... we were at Ocean Beach Saturday. What an incredible boat day! One of the top ten of all time. Spectacular weather that was summer-like. Bay was like glass straight through into the night. OB was hopping with people. Restaurants were all running out of stuff cause it was their last weekend open for most. Some had already closed. Beach was beautiful. The Palms place was hopping but we ate at the Hideaway. Dock master was awesome and the food was great. Boat was rocking from the usual nearby traffic but that made it all entertaining. A stunning 65 foot yacht pulled in which made for some great sightseeing.

Had a bunch of neighbors/ friends and our ride back home was stunning. What a great boat day!
 
I was at Ocean Beach yesterday. Fished off Montauk on a friend's boat Saturday, had a few striped bass and a bunch of sea bass and porgies. Then Sunday it was time to run my boat home from Montauk. Beautiful calm ocean the whole way. It was so nice out 15 minutes after I arrived home picked up a friend and we headed back out and went to Atlantique. Actually had to look around for a slip I would fit into, didn't expect so many boats there on the last Sunday in September! It was like a July/August weekend with all the boats and people hanging out, kids in the water, etc. Stayed late and then walked over to Ocean Beach around sunset to see if anything was open. Stopped at one place for drinks and then we had dinner at another. Funny you should mention places running out of things, because my first question was "do you still have a full menu at this point?" and he rattled off all the things they were out of. Still had a decent meal from what they had and then walked back to Atlantique and got ready to head back home. Even after dark it never really got cold. Ran the boat 120 nautical miles yesterday between the Montauk run and last minute Fire Island trip. Didn't get home till 11:30pm, stretched that weekend as long as I could :)
 
The issue with the "soft Mud" is that there is the occasional brick, cinder block, chair, dock box, log, etc.
Where do you think all the crap from Sandy went?
Last time I went down a canal, I had plenty of water going in, but coming out, it got shallow and I just touched and caught what felt like a log and it was jsut enough to bend a blade. $1200 canal ride!

With IPS, I don't explore anything I don't know!
 
Fair points Dave, especially not wanting to explore anything you don't know with your IPS. I respect it.

John... I too tried to get into Atlantique on Saturday and every single spot was taken. It looked like Laguardia airport on a Friday afternoon with all the boats hovering inside searching for a spot. Bummer but made me smile that so many boaters were grabbing another spectacular weekend.
