Im a new boater and have been trolling quite a bit with some success and alot of fun but would like to know how to bottom fish correctly. What kind of rigs and bait would be best?
Thanks alot!

I use a couple differn't rigs and baits, I have been fishing offshore for about 3 years now, I go out of the ponce inlet, and some times a little more south. It took me about 6 months to get my numbers, and I think it is important to get a decent color fish finder. But to really no what rigs and bait to use I can't say unless I know where your fishing at, west coast to east coast is differn't fishing from what I have heard, but here is a good links that I read, and they also have a great forum from your region....when you open the link click on the forum at the top and then scroll down until you find your region....hope this helps.

I went bottom fishing in the Gulf out of Biloxi twice.

Here's what I learned.
First you get out the Bass rig's and catch a bunch of fish to use for live bait. These little fish are in the inlet canal's that take you out to the open water. It was a bunch of fun. We used little green flipper tail jigs.

With a box full of live bait, we headed out to a "Ledge, or rock or wreck or rift" in the bottom.
The fish congregate around all those things.
If you dont have them marked on your GPS you are really fishing in the dark.

When you let your live bait down. As soon as the lead hits bottom, reel up two, three maybe four turns. Quick like a bunny.

The competition for food down there is fierce. As soon as it hits bottom, it gets all kinds of attention.
Something will dart out, grab your bait and dart back under his hiding spot.
You probably will lose your bait and the lead weight trying to pull it back out from the obstruction.
So....when it hits, rod tip up, and reel those turns up quick.
Then start feeling as you slowly let down and raise up the Tip of the rod.

If you get three or four raises/lowers, pull up and start it again. You may have to move the boat.
Dont bother anchoring. Have somebody hold you over the spot.

We got Drum, Red Snapper, something that looked like a Big Black Cod, Ray's and a Shark.

Dont pass up those Ray's. Over on the left coast they 'core' those Ray's and sell the little round morsels as Scallops to those poor unsuspecting fresh fish buyers.

Most of your good, local tackle shops will be glad to give you advise for the type of fishing that is done in that area. They are a great resource for tackle information. Use them.

You will probably go out of Hillsboro or Port Everglades inlet. There are 3 reefs and you can find good bottom fishing for Grouper an Snapper on the inside edge of 3rd reef. The drift is usually in Northward direction and if you have a Depth/Fish finder, try looking for some kind of structure and drop anchor.(off the side of the reef) 50 to 100 ft depth.
30 lb test line, Egg sinker rigged to slide up and down your line(size depends on current, you want the sinker to hold bottom.Any small bait,Sardines/Pilchards as well as cut bait will work. 3-4 ft Leader with medium sized hook. If you get a lot of Grunt, try another spot. If you hook into a Grouper you will have to get him off the bottom fast or he will take you rig into a hole.
I have had my best luck between Hillsboro and Boca.
Good luck, have fun, maybe we will meet up one day.
