Buckley Cove Crash Victim Finally Found

have been following this story in the Record, and it has been poorly reported. The anchored boat's location was never given. Buckley cove is a meaningless description. However the skipper of the anchored vessel, which he desdribed as 27
, told officials he was displaying the required anchor light. This accident reminds me of one a few years ago on Fourteen Mile Slough at the entranceto Village West Marine at night. A ski boat ran down an anchored small fishing boat, causing a fatality. Perhaps someone can recall whether the fishing boat had lights. I wonder if the fact that the victim in the Buckley Cove fatality had just bought his boat was a factor in the accident. Maybe we should do some boater ed with reporters in boating accidents to inform them of the information they should be providing. The Record's several stories were written by several writers. Obviously, their city desk doesn't know beans about boating! === Warren P.S. Pardon the typos.

I agree. But, it is not only the record. I have been following on news10 online also and evidently they are all getting their information from the same sources. So sad and tragic. We have anchored out all night many times with proper lights on. Just never know what will happen.

I agree Warren. They also do not beans about the Delta. I doubt they actually know where Buckley Cove is located! The same is true with reporting in the Contra Costa Times. Their reports often include errors in location, lack of knowledge of the Rules of the Road, etc. The Delta is the stepchild for these organizations. IMHO

I did the recovery of the 27'. It was mid-channel on the SDWC west of Buckley Cove. It was beat pretty good on the port side.

The guy who was run over in 14 mile a few years ago, was fishing right on the corner of the 90 degree turn... without lights. If I recall he was Asian... I think. He probably had no idea of what could come around that corner, neither size or speed. There probably isn't a worse "corner" in the Delta. All 700 boats in Village West have to come by that turn. Gees, I've been passed on that turn. Very sad. That spot should be marked 5mph and or no fishing or anchoring. Morever, with the price of gas, now the ski boats barely leave the marina and 5mph zone before they start pullling people. In all seriousness, that should be a 5mph no wake zone.

I agree! The first time I went up 14 Mile Slough, I went to idle speed near there because I wasn't sure of the depths. Several boats came towards me cutting across the corner and up on plane. Scared me to death! The only reason we didn't collide was because I was being so alert and was able to pull over into the tules. I'll take a collision with the tules over another speeding boat any day!

I've come across downed skiers/wakeboarders several times at that 90 degree corner several times this summer. That's just a disaster waiting to happen. The boat that has been anchored out of sight (if you're coming from the south) in the middle of the channel all summer just past the bend on the "northern" branch of 14 mile slough on the way to Disappointment Slough isn't in a very good location either.
