Have a wedding in Vermont this july 4th weekend. I was wondering if anybody went up that far. How long would it take after Albany. I guess no gift I'll need the money for fuel. Oh well it is just an idea.

Great trip...allow 1 long day for the locks..then its 3 or 4 hours if I remember right...

I have an 1988 30ft Carver Santigo, operate at 2900rpm or 20mph. How long after the locks? I don't know what speed you travel to rech in 3-4 hours. Spend must of my time in the river and sound. never did locks difficult? Do you know where I can get more info thanks

Plan two long days, you won't get all the thru the locks from Haverstraw in one day. It's still a few hours from lock 12 to Burlington, but it's a gorgeous trip.

Thanks for your info would appreciate if you had info on marinas.

Could find any on marinas.com. They used have info about the marinas but no more

check out Boating on the Hudson website. they have references to canal boating. Get the cruising guide.

Contact the NY State Canal Corporation to get some good tourism info. Or come to "my" Metro Boat Show on Feb 8-10 in White Plains - we'll be handing out a lot of free stuff on upstate boating there...

Don't know where in Vermont you will be staying, but someone mentioned Burlington? As mentioned before, best to figure 2 days from federal lock in Troy NY to Lake Champlain. Then 1 day to Burlington makes a comfortable trip.
There are 2 marinas in Whitehall NY just north of lock 12. You can also tie up to the wall overnight just south of lock 12 and walk to town.
Also, as stated above, the NY State Canal Corp has info.
Several marinas on Lake Champlain. If you are staying in Burlington around July 4 you should call the Burlington Boathouse at 802 865 3377 when they open around May 1st to make reservations. They fill up fast at that time of year
Also The Lake Champlain Atlas of Navagational Charts (order on line) is a good way to go for charts. The lake is well buoyed. The buoy system was originally set up for tugs pushing gasoline and fuel barges so a couple of buoys are not critical for our size boats. But without local knowledge one should respect them ALL, as some are very critical. For instance 90 feet of water on one side and 2 feet with stumps on the "wrong" side.
As of last year the very best gas price on the lake was at Buoy 39 Marina on the Vermont side about one mile south of Fort Ticonderoga on the NY side of the lake.
The name is from the since renumbered buoy system. The marina is at green can #73.
Speaking of buoy numbers, be aware that the reds and greens change sides after you leave the Hudson River
Buoy 39 has only 22 - 25 boats. We keep RONJO there. If you do stop there ask John or Cindy if Ron & Doris are around.
Good luck.
Ron PS Obviously-it is Burlington-kind of late last night and wasn't paying attention to what I was reading(LOL)

Two days from the Federal Lock to Whitehall is a nice trip and comforatable without pushing limits.
A few hours from Whitehall to Burlington is reasonable but to do it you can't be afraid of the throttles or the guys that seem to lay around every corner in the middle of the Channel fishing. It really is a beautiful trip though.

Hey Dan, there is some good info already on this thread - those phone numbers posted above will come in handy. Also, as I mentioned to you in the parking lot today you'll get a lot of good stuff from the NY State Canal Corporation as well as those cruising guides. I'll be out of commission for a few days (going to Columbia for a cardiac cath, lucky me) but when I get back I'll try to put some links up here...

Well. I have been checking maps and it appears I have about 300 mile trip to North Hero Islane. Fifgure 1 tank per 100 miles tank holds 150 gallons at $4.00/gal which could be conservative. It would cost be $1800.00 one way. Looks that it is a little steap.

300 Miles?....I think you need to research that a bit more.
Based on where MAHOPAC, ny is I assume you'd be leaving from somewhere just north of Croton on the Hudson? I don't know for sure how far it is from there to the Federal Lock but it seems to me that if I remember right (logs are on the boat) it was something like 68 miles or so from the Erie Champlain Hudson Junction to Whitehall....Let's call it 70 and assume that Croton on the Hudson is about 60 miles from the Federal Lock?.....That's a long way from 300......Doesn't even equate to 300 round trip....Am I missing something?
By the way...How big a boat do you have? 150 gallons per 100 miles seems awful steep....(100 miles per 150 gallons=0.6666 miles per gallon) Speed on the Champlain Canal is limited so you'll be doing alot better fuel-wise there anyways. I get about 1 mile per Gallon on a 12,000 lb. Boat with twin 350's and Merc. I/O's. I'm going from the western end of Oneida Lake this July to at least Kingston NY and probably a bit further south and figuring on roughly $3000.00 in Gas. I can't imagine you burning $2800.00 from where you are to Burlington.
I MUST be missing something.....

Actually Croton is about 80 from Federal Lock, and North Hero Island is a good distance up Lake Champlain from Whitehall (about 100 miles), so Dan's mileage math is probably pretty good...

BTW, its a 360 mile round trip from Sylvan Beach (Lake Oneida) to Kingston. We calculated it out when we did our big trip up that way in 2002...

But back to Champlain - Dan, the one thing you might be overestimating is the price of that fuel. I don't think its going to be $4.00/gallon. $3.50 is more like it. So $3.50/gal times 600 miles would be $2100. Still a lot of dough, but not quite so bad...

Dan, make sure you come down to White Plains next weekend and pick up some canal/upstate travel literature that we'll have on display at the Boat Show. If you can't make it let me know and I'll save some for you...

measured with google earth 110 miles to the trok lock, 170 miles to whitehall and 270 to north hero island just above burlington

Yeah, its definitely a long trip. Well, it sure will be an adventure, won't it???

Sorry....There were a couple of mentionings of Burlington so I assumed that was the destination...Completely missed Hero Island.

Yeah, its a little farther north. Champlain is a BIG lake!!!

Been in Florida since Feb 7. Just reviewing the fuel prices and it seems that fuel should be at least $4.00/ gal at the the dock. I can't seem to justify the trip. It's a shame. The cost of fuel has really impacted our use of our boats. Spending a summer at Croton Point doesn't do it.
