Can't find Sae40 oil

I am have trouble finding sea 40 oil. All I can find is Tractor Supplies generic brand in a 2 gallon bottle. Any ideas where to find it elsewhere? Also, should I be using detergent or non-detergent oil?

What are you using it for? Detergent in an engine. Try NAPA.

Rotella straight 40 is usually easy to find, try diesel/truck shops or indeed napa

West marine also carries straight 40, if not on th shelf at all store they can probably order it
 
I have fought this battle the last few years and this year I am thinking about switching to Mercury's 25W40 marine oil which I know I can find. Will Crusaders run on merc oil :)

I was able to buy Castrol 40HD oil at the chain auto store. Advance Auto Parts in my case, but it wasn't commonly available in other places. I decided to start using 20W-50 and have been very pleased. Doesn't appear to be any down side AND it actually uses less oil than with 40HD. I'd like to try synthetic but don't think I want to try that in an 18-YOA engine with 1300-hours.
 
Are you sure your engine specs SAE 40 for ambient temps that far north?

My blue 5.7L engines call for SAE 10W-40 or straight SAE 30 in the ambient temps during our boating season.

The detergent helps neutralize acids formed during the combustion process.

The brand name doesn't matter a whole lot as long as the oil meets or exceeds the "S" classifcation spec'd for that engine as well as the proper weight for expected air temp range,.... and spec'd oil & filter change schedules are adhered to. My 2003 Crusaders spec changes every 50 hrs. .
 
My '93, 37C with Crusader 454 XLs called for straight 40W. Used Quaker State until they stopped making it; switched to Pennzoil 40W till I sold boat.
 
Try Walmart. I've bought the straight 40 weight Shell Rotella in there several times for my old motors. I use Mercruiser 25/40 synthetic in the new ones, but remember still seeing the Rotella in Walmart.
 
Wal-Mart has straight 30 Rotella but not 40.

The owners manual calls for straight 40 for the weather we boat in. I believe it says straight 40 for 50 degrees and up. Our boat comes out of the water for the winter.

I've been using rosella straight 40 weight in my crusader 502 since new in 1996. Oil still comes out golden at oil changes.
I buy a few cases at a time from a local oil distributor who normally stocks it and it fists me less
 
NAPA is where I get mine from. If they don't have in stock, they can usually order it. Otherwise Advance Auto also carries some. Could probably order online from places too, not sure what shipping would cost...

NAPA's brand oil is actually Valvoline re-branded, so If you can find somewhere that carries that...
 
Just ordered Rotella SAE 40 from NAPA. $18.49 per gallon. Will be in tomorrow.

Just went to pick up the oil. Two gallons were for diesel motors and one was not. The girl behind the counter tried to convince me that there is no difference because they have the same number in their system. I always heard that there is a difference so I left them there. Is there a difference?

I was at Tractor Supply today, they had all brands of 40 weight.
 
Jim, just yesterday I picked up a case of SAE40 at CarQuest Auto Parts. They have locations in Amsterdam and Saratoga Springs, according to Google Maps.
