Canvas

Well, I was not planning on replacing my canvas until next year but while Pennybridge had my boat out on the test run the other day the front panel gave out. Can't see dumping anymore money into it so I'm replacing the whole thing this year instead. I have used Harry Parker. Many are happy with his work but he did a horrible job on the front & side eisenglass panels he made for me three years ago. They never fit and although he came back a number of times to try to correct the issue they still never fit. They were obviously sized wrong but instead of doing the whole thing over again he kept trying to jimmy rig them in until it got to the point where even the back canvas no longer fit properly because he tried to force the whole thing so far forward. So, I'. going to use John Patino for this job. He did some work for me last year & I was happy with it. This will not be the usual canvas replacement. The original canvas that came with my boat (2002 Chap Signature) is a terrible design. Goes under the radar arch & attaches to inside the arch. Needless to say, the water pours in during a heavy rain. I am having the new canvas redesigned to attach to the outside of it. So he will have to put in tracks, new poles, snaps etc & he will need to remopve some old snaps & fix the holes. Hopefully this will end my water intrusion problems because 7 years of it has been a real PITA.

Do you expect to have the job done this season or next Judy?

Also did you sell your house to pay him?

He is expensive for OK work IMO.

LOL John. Keeping my fingers crossed it's this year. Who other than Harry Parker is available, reliable, affordable in our area?? I would get quotes from them.

Judy, you could try Bill Fennel, he does work for Warren all the time. He is at PBM quite often.

Why does Warren need so much canvas work? Is he still having trouble docking that thing? ;)

Excellent Question John and I am glad you asked.... Actually I find if I consistently have work done on my canvas, it keeps the wild boars away....(This is a fecicious interjection) Actually, Fennel removes my Canvas in the fall, cleans it, stores it, re-stitches where necessary, installs it and refits it on my boat in the spring. This year he did this for $250.00. He does nice work, communicates well, and is very reasonable with his pricing.

Well we talked over our canvas replacement & decided we will get some other people to give us prices as well. We certainly have no problem paying a fair price but at this point we are not sure what exactly defines fair price. I am meeting with Fennel soon & have a few more people & am waiting to schedule with.

I forgot about him. If it is - He did some nice work on one of my old boats in the past.

I quess we can all tell a horror story about someone. If it is SeaFarer, try to deal with Hidie if she is still there.

Here are 2 canvas guru's
David Ware - Stellar Sails 209-838-9881
John Pitano - Pitano Canvas 845-304-7305

They both did great work for me... Time and cost

He is no longer in business. From what I understand he decided to pursue something different.

Didn't he take up hiding from the people whom he had taken money and/or
their canvas?

I never had a problem with Dennis, good work, done quickly at a fair price.

He did good work for me after I hunted him down. He finally showed up when I stopped payment on a check.

So I've looked at 6 or 7 boats that Patino did. Now granted, I'm no canvas expert but they all looked pretty good to me. Everything fit well, quality material etc. Some of the boats I saw was new work, some were a few years old. What am I not seeing that some of you feel is only so-so work?

Judy;

John Patino made our mooring cover and it came out perfect. He is currently redoing all of the seating and carpeting in the cockpit and we are more than happy with his work. Prior to doing this we got quotes from Patino and Harry Parker. Although I'm sure Harry does good work, his price was more than two times Patinos. Perhaps he is just overbooked right now and did'nt need the work as badly as Patino's.

The one place John has fallen behind on was his promised completion dates, but I have found this to be true with every Canvas guy we ever worked with.

When he care he does good work just takes forever. I have also seen some work that he has had to redo many times. Plus in some cases his advertisement sewn into the middle of a piece of canvas. But all in all his work is good when he does it. His father and brother were very good as well.
