Captain lou's fishing Fleet

Last year we observed one of Captain lou's party/ fishng boats almost run over a small boat at the end of Freeport canal. Total disregard for rules just plowed right tru boats pulling into the gas dock at speed.
Yesterday witnessed The Star Stream VIII barrel tru the point look out draw bridge doing at least 10 knts with multiple boats in his path. He gave two short toots of his horn and then passed with in feet of small sail boat and two lil fishing canoes... I couldn't believe what I saw ... Total disregard for peoples safety... Never mind what he did to the boats anchored off the beach... Absolutely no reason so his poor judgment. Tide was slack and wind was non existent . I hope people called and blasted the office the way he waked the crap out of those familys ....

I hear ya Rob, It seems like 5 mph/ no wake is a suggestion not a law. The speed and wakes going up and down the river is out of control. I don't want to raise a stink, so I keep my mouth shut, but it's all day everyday. Commercial boats, ferry's, big pleasure boats, console's and even little inflatables. It is a total disregard for other people. Glad I have a big enough boat I really don't feel it. It seems common courtesy and common sense are the two most common problems in boating.

I actually got a reply from Captain lou;s owner.

So I guess they are human

I know what you guys mean for total disregard. This past weekend as I was coming out of my marina I signaled with my horn (as I always do) to let any other vessels know that I was coming out of my marina. As I proceeded very slowly and checked to my port and starboard I had to take my transmissions out of gear and then had to back down because an approaching vessel was to busy taking selfies. The guy was at the helm, hands off of the wheel, FACING BACKWARDS, not even looking where he was going. This is why licensing won't improve boater safety, only enforcement of current laws.

Okay, I'm done venting, who's next?

He said he was going to have a discussion with his Captains.

Was two emails one saying they recived my email. then 2nd was from the owner

Im sure they have video cameras on board. There is no arguing the Captin screwed the pooch !

I was leaving the fuel dock over on Woodcleft on Sunday. Capt Lou came flying by throwing a massive wake.

I was backing out of the slip at the dock and capt lou was quite a ways back. By the time I got turned around and started heading towards him he was already passing my port side about 8-10ft off my port side. At this point I was still pretty dang close to the fuel dock. I wonder if he even saw me.

Of course, I tried hailing him on the radio, no answer. I also gave him the one finger salute...

If you were leaving the dock and entering the channel, then how is Capt Lou at fault? Just trying to understand the situation - not flaming.
 
Are you familiar with that canal? Its a wide canal and I was hugging the dock. He didnt have to come so close to the dock. He was supposed to be on the east side of the canal heading north, instead he was on the west side heading north.

Chris I'm glad you are taking an interest and maybe you have the power to help! I think the issue is speed and courtesy. I understand that the fishing boats are just trying to do what they are paid to do but they still need to adhere to the same rules as the rest of us. I have seen this time and time again in many areas not just Long Island, I have learned to simply stay clear whenever possible and expect a total disregard.

Im very familiar with the canal and friends with almost all the party boat captains and owners on both sides.
They have their frustrations as well Im sure - Ive witnessed too many times in that canal people not giving right of way.
So you were already in channel or just entered? I just want to get particulars so I know clearly what happened.

Hi Dave,
I have no problem trying to help as long as I understand what has happened. As I stated in previous post, Im friends with almost all the party boat guys - I can go to Mike and speak to him. He runs one of the nicest and cleanest operations and am surprised to hear of these situations.
 
We had a problem with the ferries throwing off huge wakes when they came past our marinas, on their "leaf watching" trips. We tried hailing them on 16 and asking them to slow down, they ignored us. Finally, one came by and his wake caused damage to our docks and some boats in the marina. We called the Sheriff, who came over to take a report. As the Sheriff was there, the ferry came back down the river. The Sheriff ordered him to stop, and went out and boarded him and got information for us. That wake ended up costing the ferry company several thousand dollars.

Now when they come by, they slow down to idle speed.
 
In my experience on the water for many years and all over, not just LI, I have pretty much observed all that has been stated above. I don't think this is just a "Captain Lou Fleet" issue. Guessing time is money and they rush to get back and leave? The FI ferries are IMHO, the worst, what I mean by that is, in my experience when I have the right of way, they ignore such and stay their path.
 
I was backing out of the gas dock with a clear channel.

I wasnt gunning it in reverse, slow and steady is my way. By the time I got turned around, he was 10ft off my port side. Why he hugged the west side of the canal is beyond me.
