Happy New Year everyone. I am new to the forum and a new owner of a 2001 Carver 356 MY. I was wondering if anyone has performance data that they have put together on a 356 with 7.4 mercruisers? I have been reading the comments on Flo-scan sensors and that may be something I do in the future but in the meantime any help would be appreciated. I understand the that there are many variables to consider (load, tide, wind, etc.) but right now we are running blind on only RPM vs. SOG. Thanks in advance!

Hey Carver,
Good to see you made it to the forum. I'm not sure how many of these boats were made with the 6.2 liters, it may be hard to find that data. I found this data from one with the largest gas motors it came with. Maybe the data could be co-related if you calculate your wide open throttle mph and rpm as a percentage of these numbers. They are a little hard to read, I can email you the link to the data.
As a comparison, my boat with the 7.4 liters does 28 mph at 4400 rpm wide open, done in Arkansas on sea trial day. Most of my running time last season was at 1400 rpm or so, miser mode. Hoping to increase my fuel budget this year.

The Carver salesman guide from 2001 shows the 356 with the Mercury Mag 6.2 MPI's best cruise at 21 mph (3600 RPM) and 31 mph (3800 RPM).

Its apparently such a rare option they don't even show the GPH data on this engine.

They do however have:

-7.4 MPI at 310 HP Cruising at 22 MPH/3400 RPM Burning 25 GPH. Top speed 30 MPH/4520 RPM Burning 51 GPH.
-Mercury 454 MAG Horizons at 380 HP Cruising at 25 MPH/3500 RPM Burning 25 GPH. Top speed 34 MPH/4900 RPM Burning 53 GPH.
-Volvo 7.4 Gi at 310 HP Cruising at 21 MPH/3400 RPM Burning 25.5 GPH. Top speed 30 MPH/4585 RPM Burning 50 GPH.
-Cummins 6BTA Diesels at 330 HP Cruising at 27 MPH/2600 RPM Burning 24.6 GPH. Top Speed 31 MPH/2880 RPM Burning 33.4 GPH.

Its also interesting to see that the Diesels in this boat offer better speed but not a ton more efficiency. Of course the Diesels will shine when the boat is loaded down for a trip but its not going to be terribly far off.

VTBoater, thanks for the welcome. Took a bit and had to come in under a different email...no worries. Well, I messed up my first post! You guys got me thinking that I had the details wrong and sure enough..I have 7.4s in the boat (I shopped so many vessels I confused myself). I think the info you provided should help. If you have it in another format, feel free to send it to the email you have for me previously. Thanks again and I'll race you come Summer!!
