Does anyone know if the 356 has filters on the waste tank vents, and if so, where are they located? Also the location on the hull where the vents exit would be great.

Not sure if they have them...depends on year I'm thinking. They would be located fairly close to the tank, and the aft tank is under the aft bed, and the fwd tank is in the engine compartment. The vents in the hull would be near the tank as well.

I have vent filters on my 2001 356. I do not know if they are factory or not. The aft one resides beside the aft waste tank, and the forward one is mounted forward of the right hand engine.

Some more information: My 356 is a 1999 Model. The forward tank is underneath the steps between the dinette and the galley. I can see it from the dinette access and from the galley floor. I can see portions of the vent lines but can see any filters. The aft tank is beside the bed in the aft cabin. Once again I can see portions of the vent line but no filter. The documentation that came with the boat specifies where the vents should exit the hull, but it doesn't appear to be correct. I will check beside the starboard engine to see if I can find a filter there. Thanks

John,
Wondering why you are asking, are you getting smell inside the boat after a head flush? I just worked on that problem Saturday. I'm working through issues on this boat, it is my first season with it and it was a bit neglected.
The aft tank is under a removable panel on the aft room floor beside the bed. My carpet was not glued down there. I removed the door to the aft room to make it easier. Pulled the carpet back as much as possible. Got to the tank. Doused all fittings and caps with soapy water, then flushed. Lots of bubbling seen at level sending unit, leaking air out when flushing, causing smell. The sending unit turned out to be broken. There is only a small area between the top of the tank and the floor, so they bent the unit at some point. Not easy getting it out. Had to removed the hoses, cut the strap, and slide the tank aftward. I ended up using the sending unit from the forward tank, as I'm suspecting a possible leak there somewhere. Got it all back together, no more bubbles, no more smell, finally have one working non smelly head to use.
I just ordered a replacement tank monitor sending unit from Great lakes skipper today, Sealand brand, same as what is said on the bad one. You can see what it looks like on ebay, type in sealand tank monitor.
Good luck.

VTBoater, I am having the exact same problem. I think there are leaks in the system. I did find oneof the caps on the sending unit was not tight. I pumped everything again and retreated the tanks. I was going to remove the vent lines and clean with air and water and reinstall. I didn't want to ruin any charcoal filters if there were some out of sight. I called Carver today and they confirmed there are no filters below 2001 models. Hoping for the best and good luck with yours. I will let you know if I find any silver bullets!

Another piece of info for you, the vent line fittings are pretty long, and getting the hoses off them is nearly impossible. I broke the forward tank fitting trying to get the hose off. On the aft tank I just cut off an inch or two of the hose at the fitting instead of trying to wrestle it off.
I highly recommend the soapy water trick, or if you can find some, there is a product called snoop that is made for finding air leaks. Everything is tricky to take apart, so working on anything that you don't need to just adds time, frustration, and smell! Not a good smelling job to tackle.
I blew air through the aft vent line after working on the tank, and it was fine. Just was not working because of a major crack in the level sensing unit/cap.
The aft vent line is the aft most white through hull on the port side, where there are 3 white thru hulls together.

Do you happen to know where the forward tank vent line exits the hull. I believe the problem is in my forward tank and not the aft one.

I did not search out that piece of the puzzle, sorry. My owners manual which is on the boat does show diagrams of where the tanks and vents are located.
