I have been looking at the Carver 42 motor yacht (1987 to 1990).I currently have a 36 Uniflite sedan. I would appreciate input anyone might have regarding this boat. I boat in the RI area and would like to take a trip up the Hudson and the Erie canal to the Great Lakes.

I would make sure you look for a diesel one. Other than that they are great boats.
 
I have a later version called 440. with diesels it is a good boat. look on the carver.com site under service for old brochures.
 
Bill, go have a look at the HRCC forum for info on the trip up the Hudson and canals...
 
Thanks for the info. I checked on Yachtworld for diesel powered 4207's and all seem to be powered by 3208TA Cats. Are these a reliable engine??

sure are, though the 425 hp versions are reported to be a bit too hopped up. Of course you dont have to run them at 425 hp.
 
Bruce is right. The 3208 is a very popular engine in many different brands of boats and he is also right about the high HP models putting out too much HP for the engine.
It won't go fast but a non-turbo 3208 will last a very long time.
 
All the 42s with Diesels were the 3208 375 HP. versions. Some had 300 Cummins if I am not mistaken as well.
 
two of the best engine models ever though 300HP may be a little light for loaded on plane cruising in a high 30k pounds boat but in trawler mode they cant be beat.
 
I have an 87' 4207 with Crusaders and have never, ever had any regrets with not going with diesel. The boat cruises nicely with ample speed and runs cleaner at a fraction of the cost. Its a fabulous boat that is arguably one of the best buys for the money in the used boat market. I have been on numerous 50+ ft. boats that dont feel as large as mine. Of course I am biased but you cant go wrong with this one
 
pj: I share your enthusiasm. Friends with other brands in the same size range wish they had found Carver as well.
 
If not too late, I have a 4207 with diesels (3208s). Love the boat. It was recommended to us by a Sea Ray dealer!
