Carver Construction Question

I own a 370 IDENTICAL to the boat pictured and the exact same thing happend to mine as well as 3 others I know of in the area. Carver stood behind their product all the way through and fixed it better than new. I have had my boat in 4-6s with no problem and no more hull flexing. I know that all the boats are fixed that had that problem.

That is reassuring and useful information! Thanks for sharing it...

Notwithstanding the general dock opinion of Carver 370s, I have issue with Pascoe.

I bought his book "Surveying Fiberglass Power Boats". While I do not profess to be anywhere near an expert in boats, I do feel that I have above average knowledge in the area of electrical and electronic principles, having been in this field for 35 years professionally.

In the electrical section of that book, in my opinion, there were a lot of mistakes, and downright false information. I have no idea whether these were editorial mistakes or comes from lack of knowledge.

Maybe its wrong on my part, but I base a lot of my logical conclusions by osmosis. One of my basic principles is that if what I can see looks wrong, what else is wrong that I cannot see? Or in this case, if Pascoe is wrong in areas that I know about, is he maybe wrong in other areas as well?

So for that reason, I take his opinion with less regard than I once did.

Even then, no one should ever base their purchase of a boat or lack thereof by some abstract review. Only a surveyor that inspects a boat can assess the condition of a boat.

That's true, and thanks for the observation on Pascoe's book, however I might point out that you don't have to survey every 1980 2896 Mariner like mine in order to know that those boats are very, very susceptible to water intrusion into the balsa cored bottom that can turn them into absolute junk in no time. It is, therefore, reasonable to caution others based on basic knowledge you have of a particular manufacturer's or model's deficiencies. Now an educated buyer can still get a great example of a 2896 Mariner (I sure think I did last year!) but unless someone raises a red flag how would anyone know what to look for???

IMHO Pascoe is wise to try to cancel out some people's overenthusiasm for things they don't know enough about and are not prepared for. I've seen enough people nearly kill themselves over the years by getting into boats that were ill equipped to handle the tasks the new owner had in mind, simply because of his/her ignorance. It is sobering, and smart, to take a good long look at those 370 pictures Pascoe posted, because at least then you know what the worst case looks like and can be educated/prepared for it if you are that unfortunate on that boat or any other manufacturer or model. If for no other reason than it makes you appreciate better the good boat that you bought, even if its another 370...

I have a 83 carver 3007 sport fish. All my stringers and bulkheads git eaten up by termites. And basically all wood parts are infested. Is it worth replacing all of it or just junk it and cut my loss.

Have gotten any repair estimates yet? Will insurance cover any of the repair/replacement?

Sounds expensive; if I'm paying for the repairs, probably junk it.

Hopefully, someone with actual experience will weigh in with a better answer.

Can’t imagine it would make sense to repair unless the damage is very limited. In most cases it s impossible to reach all the stringers without tearing up the floors etc. Engines will have to come out too. What’s a 40 year old carver worth? $15/20k

A 42 year old Carver doesn’t have much value to begin with and replacing all that wood will be a very expensive job. Just continue using the boat until you can’t and then junk it.
FYI, you really should start a new thread instead of piggy backing on one that is 17 years old.
Also, there is a Carver yacht owners website forum you might want to check out.
