Hi all,

I have a question regarding a Mariner 3396 that I am looking at.

One of the engines is siezed (not sure which one as of yet).

The question that I have is this: are the engines counter-rotating?

They are 302 fords acording to the owner. I wanted to check the prices of a replacement engine. Aparently rotation is a determining factor.

It is inboard drive (twin screw?)
Owner states that the one engine runs well. he isn't sure what happened to the other.

Is an engine swap in an inboard harder than an I/O?

I am very mechanically inclined so would be doing much of the work myself. The most intimidating factor would be the shaft alignment. Is this process very hard? Of course I will have a factory service manual to refer to, just trying to get the skinny since I am not familiar with twin engine setups. I hear tell that they are a dream to handle.

Thanks for the info,
Michael & Sharon

The engines would defiately counter rotate each other in that era of boat. As far as being easier or harder, I'd say, although different, probably about the same difficulty

Left engine left rotation? (from the front?) I know it is getting to be generalized perhaps should have posted this in the engine section, just didn't know if some manufactures did or didn't counter-rotate.

Thanks,
Michael

because of transmission limitations, all had to use left and right rotations engines. I'm not sure which one rotates which direction, because the V-drive in your boat complicates things. Maybe try calling Carver to see if they know.

That is a good point about calling Carver. I will gather as much info as possible and give them a call as well.

In the meantime anyone got a link that explains how to align the shaft once the engine is in?

Hi,
Boat has cored hull so be sure you have hull condition checked, meaning don't make my mistake and trust someone who tells you not to worry because its solid glass which it is not.
I have the original engine manual I will check.

i'd be a little leary of an owner not knowing (or caring to divulge) what happned to an engine that is seized. i mean, two engines aren't that difficult to keep track of, right?

Eddie and Bruce,

Thanks for the info. Rest assured the hull will be checked by a professional.

The guy doesn't seem to know much about the boat or boats in general. The boat is about 3 hours drive away, and have been relying on e-mail info so far. I am planning a trip there this weekend to get the real skinny for myself.

I was looking at rebuilt engines online, but didn't find any reference to a reverse rotation. Is there a way to tell just by looking at the engine? (probably not but it was worth asking).

Would these engines be mercruiser? OMC? VP? Crusader?

Not being familiar with Carver products I am at a disadvantage since I can't "Put my hands on it"

Generally speaking is this a good boat? I like the lines and the interior space.

It does have a nice clean hull and all the canvas is inact and functional.
Thanks,
Michael

The best way that I know of to tell if an engine is counter rotating is to look at the distributor cap, trace all the plug wires and make notes of the firing order on each engine. Then compare your findings to a factory standard rotating engine. Sorry, I don't know the firing order of a 302 off the top of my head.

If the boat is a pre-80, look long and hard at the teak and plywood coring around the side windows. The boat has a ton of teak that will keep you quite busy maintaing. My bro-in-law had a 78 and leaks around the windows were a chronic problem. I believe they switched to aluminum frames in 80. Boat has a great internal layout and fairly easy to work on. Has big barn door for trim tabs but scoots along quite nicely with the small blocks-he had crusaders.

The engines are probably Pleasurecraft or Waukeshaw. There was another brand they used, but the name escapes me. Crusaders have always (to my knowledge) used GM engines and Volvo didn't make gas inboards back then. Could be OMC, but I doubt it...what is their color?

My '93, 37C Silverton has counter rotating "PROPS" but engines are not. The change is made in the transmission.
