You can keep anything you catch in this Derby...

Many, including myself, prefer to release sturgeon, since their numbers are so low. I like to eat fish, but do not care for the taste of sturgeon - just my preferrence. Plus they have quite a bit more toxins than other fish.

Can you eat everything you kill?

Mitch,

Good luck in the Derby and good on you for releasing your catch! I'm heading up to Sacramento with my son; he is entering the Braille Challenge. It is a literary contest for Braille readers. The top kids in the nation will move onto the Nationals to be held in Los Angeles in June. Personally I love the taste of sturgeon, but the decline in their population certainly supports the theory of catch and release fishing.

Sturgeon is a great tasting fish with a texture not unlike shark. The distinctive part of their flavor reminds me of peat (ummm, with just a hint of old oak). They have a very long lifespan (over 100 years) and the old fish are the big breeders, so the species can be easily overfished. Once overfished, it's pretty obvious that a recovery will take a very long time.

Personally, I agree with Walterv above. If I did't intend to eat the fish I catch, I woundn't be fishing for it in the first place.

Good luck with the derby! Looks like the organizers have conservation goals in mind.

This is one of the best years we have seen for sturgeon. We are targeting many more on the fishfinder and seeing alot more jumping and rolling than in the past five years. There have been quite a lot of oversize being caught this year as well. 110" was the biggest I had heard about. Many of these are probably pregnant females ready to spawn which is great. The slot has been lowered also this year to 46" to 66". Down from 72" max. I think these fish will be around for a long time with the proper conservation.

Just take a look at how "Catch & release" have improved the delta black bass! Now we have national tournements which are broadcast on TV. It only took about five years to go from bad to great using catch & release techniques! I'm not opposed to catch, clean and eat. But don't stuff your freezer full of fish that won't be eaten. Eaither release it, eat it fresh or give it away.

BTW folks, I absolutely love to eat fresh stripper!!!! hint--hint

I agree with everything you said (except the new slot size of 46-66" doesn't take effect until March 1st). The new annual limit will be 3 also. Punch cards will be required, but they have not arrived at retailers yet, and will be required by everyone, even children w/o licenses.

That guy that caught that 110", he'll be fishing with me during the Derby!!! :) It's Patrick, or "Bait Chucker" on CSFC Forum) (if it's the same person?).

I like to C&R sturgeon because it is a challenge to catch them, and they fight well.

Dave,
I hope your son does well, I know he will. Good luck Daniel!

Mitch, I should have clarified the starting date, just assumed everyone knew. The 110" I am referring to was approx 2 - 3 months ago. Saw the picture on the Fish Sniffer Sturgeon forum. "Beautiful" Good luck in the derby. Also, weather looks like it might even cooperate for you. Hopefully, if we can get our boat up and running again this weekend, we are talking about fishing the Super Bowl Derby next weekend. Never fished it before, sounds like fun. Again, good luck

Cat,

That's a pretty big Derby, with some serious money. Good luck! The last time I fished it was many moons ago, just haven't had the time off here recently...

Mitch,

Well ... well .... welll ... did you win? We just returned from the Braille Challenge in Sacramento. Daniel was fortunate to win 1st place in his division and got some great prizes as did all of the children participating. I was supposed to be picking up my boat with all new canvas, but unfortunately it didn't get done, so I'll be either be heading back up there tomorrow or later in the week. There is a minus tide and Dan thought it would be fun to go get limits of mussels.

Hope you did well in the Derby and most importantly, had fun!!!

Hey, Dave.....that is great news about Daniel! Please tell him how impressed his Delta friends are of him! Great kid you have there!

Liz

Thanks Liz, I'll let him know. Mitch, I just saw the derby results on my other favorite web site. You couldn't have lost to a better person. It sounds like it went really well and that everyone had a fun time. Lets hope this type of thing catches on for other derbies. Plenty of fun and the fishery stays healthy, now if I can just find a way to satisfy my craving for sturgeon :-)

Dave,

Tell Daniel congratulations for me! Way to go, that's fantastic!

Yeah, just to let others know, the Derby went extremely well. The person running it, Steve Talmage of the party boat "Flash", is a great guy, who is well respected by everyone.

The were 187 fisherpeople, and only 8-fish were caught. All of the fish were released in good health. No fish killed or harmed. One gal, Lynda Abbott, won two cash prizes from her entered sturgeon. It was karma, in that she has been actively involved in the conservation and protection of sturgeon. As Dave said, it couldn't have gone to a better person.

Everyone was very polite, nobody anchored on top of each other, the radio traffic was polite (as opposed to the other big Derby during the Superbowl weekend), and even the ramp traffic flowed nicely and smoothly.

It was a huge success, and will definately be held again...

(I had a nice sturgeon on for maybe 20-seconds, and he charged the boat. I could keep up with him, but not get enough to get a good hook set! he popped off).
