Help support getting a "cell" installed at Bethel Island:

"Notify YOUR CELLULAR CARRIERS of the crappy coverage here., The cell guys are working towards getting the antenna in and they are telling me that complaints about the coverage here drives the carriers to expand into this area. Everyone that is not happy with their cell coverage needs to call 611 on their cell phones and let their carrier know, regularly if possible. This helps them identify the weak spots.

MATT TOLY OF PACIFIC BOAT WORKS IS PUTTING UP A CELLULAR TOWER FOR OUR VARIOUS CARRIERS AND NEEDS THIS INPUT TO YOUR CARRIERS."

So don't complain....take action!

Some of us working stiffs like that the company pager then cell phone and now Blackberry doesn't work well when we go to the Bethel Island over the past 10 years. We have the VHF radio out there for communication with fellow boaters and the Sugar Barge.

True. But some of us need to maintain communication availability for our loved ones in case of emergency. VHF isn't very good for this anymore if a land lubber needs to contact you!

Just don't answer when it is the office calling........

We keep our boat at Caliente Isle Yacht Club on Bethel Island and have no problem with cell service. I have a Blackberry with AT & T, my husband uses his cell phone also with AT & T. We did have problems a few years ago with Verizon but since we changed carriers we have service in most of the areas we cruise to on the Delta. No I don't work for AT &T although my posting sounds like an AT&T commercial but we are happy with the cell coverage.

Carolyn, my experience is similar. The signal is too weak on the boat in the shed, but ok up on the levee.

Carver, I believe cell phones were invented in California! Welcome to the real world. ;)

Flutter, as a native Illinoisan, I must dispute your assertion that cellphones were invented here. The basic research and first prototypes were from Motorola in Schaumburg, IL. While they had working sets in the early '70's, it was well into the '80's before they were able to get the FCC and phone companies on board, and by that time various overseas companies had caught up....

My first cell phone was a carphone by GE back in 1986.

I've had one ever since...

To say that they have improved over the years is an understatement!

As far as Bethel Island goes, yes, my Verizon is spotty around the Island.

Folks that get to put a tower on their property make some nice coin each month...

I got my first cell phone in 1985; a Mitsubishi that mounted in the console of my Nissan 300ZX. I felt just like James Bond; who knew that 20 years later cell phones would become an electronic leash where you can never get away from work!
