Champlins

My God it's expensive where you all boat. I see prices on the Chesapeake from $1.50/ft to probably an average of $2-$2.74/ft. Just a few places might be over $3. This range of pricing is also what I pay each spring in Florida. Only one place in the Bahamas this past May was over $3/ft. Most places were $.75/ft! (water's $.25/gallon, but that's a different story).

Kurt, I heard that when the economy was booming, all the eastern LI marina owners had a meeting and agreed that if they all charged around $5/ft, it would not negatively affect them. They all came up with different ways to get to the $5/ft rate. It worked for a couple of years, but the past few years, there are tons of empty slips. We only reserved at Montauk this year - about a week before we left - because it was the weekend after the 4th.

We used to stay at Essex Island Marina for $.85/ft and it was packed. Last year, at $5/ft, we were the only transient boat there.

We used to have to reserve at every marina in February! One day, the owners will come out of their dream state and realize that if they want to fill slips, they have to lower prices. A filled slip at $2/ft is better than an empty slip at $5/ft.

Thanks for the explanation. The only thing worse than a monopoly is an oligopoly I suppose. Boats have anchors and some people know how to use them :-)

I remember your above statement a while back. Some people argued the other way if I remember correctly. Personally, I think you're right the way you have it.

Kurt I was sort of hinting at this discussion when I asked how clear the water was. I know it isn't all that great.
I defy anyone to show me a picture at Block that compares with what I will produce as crystal clear.

Dan,

Ah, I get it. I suppose you'd post something like this:

or maybe like this?

No Kurt it has to be at least 10 feet deep. :D

Hey, I've seen 10' at the Don't Rock. Of course that was riding on top of a swell...

Dave,

I figured somebody would make that comment. I do NOT have two different sized right feet. It's just that my wife and I are joined at the hip :-)

We are just seeing some of this down here. You have to wonder what takes them so long to get that simple point. Those marinas that have "adjusted" their rates are better then half full. Those that have not and well below half full.

Don't forget all of the other business boats bring.

I didn't see a monthly rate for the place do they have one?

I just returned from Block. Last year we started anchoring in Old Harbor. I do NOT go the week of the 4th, but the week after. We used to stay at Champlins but with the bigger boat, I am already spending $600+ in gas. at $150 a night for 5 nights, it really adds up. I ended up going out again for Labor Day weekend last year. Never had a problem at Champlins

Staniel Cay rocks!

Maybe it's me but that doesn't look like inviting water.

You re wrong... Both the nurse sharks and rays are harmless...

Staniel or block?? Come on... Not even close!!!

Tell that to Steve Irwin! Sharks of any kind freak me out!

Nurse sharks can only "gum" you. They don't have much in the way of teeth, thankfully.
