Changing Filter Before Draining Oil

I always change my filter at each oil change. But it would be much easier to change the filter before the engine is hot. My filters are hard to get at and it is very hot in their location on the engine. I realize that if I did this that there would be some contamination in the new filter when I start the engine to warm it up for the oil extraction. I change my oil at the end of each season. I usually put 50 hours or less eachyear on my engines.
 
You won't get a complete oil change that way. You'll have about a quart of old oil mixing with the fresh oil.
 
No mechanic but couldn't you:

- Heat up engines
- Drain oil
- Let Cool
- Change Filter
- Add oil
- Test

I realize that extends the time the job takes but I am sure these is something else you can do around the boat during that time, there always is!! :)
 
Currentsea, you have it wrong. Should be:

Heat up engines.
Drink a Beer while they warm up.
Drain Oil.
Let Cool.
Drink several Beers while they cool.
Change filter.
Add Oil.
Test.
Drink Beer.

Golfman, LOL, not sure where my head was at.
There is 2 things to do around a boat, work on boat or drink beer!
 
No need to get the engine hot, just warm it up for 4-5 minutes should be plenty.

Yep, the oil gets warm much sooner than the outside of the engine. For as often as you change your oil, I wouldn't want a less than new filter and certainly not 20% used oil...(1of5 quarts)
