Charlevoix

Charlevoix is now on the reservation system. I have made reservations there for July and found no competition for the slips.

Don't forget to eat at Juilleret's in Charlevoix. Great food, and sort of reasonably priced.

same people as Juilleret's Harbor Springs?

You bet. One in the same. I've been going there since I was a little kid.

Julleret's is closing. No one in the family wants to run the business any more and apparently no one wants to buy it.

My gf and I are in the beginning stages of planning a trip mid July from Saugatuck to Mackinac Island... We are trying to put together a plan that would give us an opportunity to see as much as we can and still enjoy some "downtime"... I am at this point thinking of staying at all types of marinas; some laid back and others that have everything including super nice restuarants and also just throwing out the hook for several nights (we are planning on two plus straight weeks of cruising leaving Saugatuck, Michigan and heading North)... I am running a 36 Trojan with 220 gallons of gas so distance shouldn't be much of a problem... looking at running 75-100 miles a day preferrably in the early morning to noon range and than docking for the rest of the day and exploring the area we're at for points of interest. Any suggestions as to how to do this with the least amount of stress on the Captain?....lol looking for spots to put into to anchor off the Lake... nice marinas to visit and stay... suggestions on making reservationsa and when to make those... Almost anything would be appreciated as I haven't cruise this area before...how often would I get "blow in at harbor" this time of year? HELP

Jim, in order to get stress out of the way asap, make your Island reservations on the state/DNR site NOW! They allow 4 contiguous days, booked up to 6 months in advance. That means that most of July is fair game, and people are snatching them up already.

If no 36 wells are available, keep adding footage until you find availability, as the system won't do that for you. (ie: it may say no space at that time, but if you repeat the process and this time call your boat a 38 footer, it'll search another group of wells)

Once you get that done, then you can plan (most) other legs in a more leisurely fashion.

Thanks for the tip SLW I am doing that now! Good Idea and well taken. It's been forty + years since I been to Mackinac Island and looking forward to landing again soon..

Jim,

I bought a 45 da in Mich City IN and took in to Cleveland (left day after Memorial Day in 2004). Didnt have one bad day of boating the whole way over except for the last hour-and it got bad. I understand it can turn quick on you and the whole key to bad weather is the ability to pretend you dont have a schedule and just enjoy the port that you are at a little while longer.

Was really new back in 04, previous experience was a 26 DA in 88-91 and boated in Lake Champlain.

MY log for your part of the trip was MichCity-Saugatuck, Frankfurt (most boring of the spots), Leland, Harobr Springs, Mackinaw. And, for stopoevers, my wife enjoyed Sauga the best--I liked Leland--harbor and mack i were close runnerups.

I think the key for you is to get north as fast as you can and then spend most of your time from Leland and all poingts north.

I was all marinas and would have enjoyed the islands ( Beaver, Manitou, etc) if I had a dinghy as knew how to use the anchor.
guess beaver has a marina so no anchor issues there.
By the time SLW is done planning his trip to Charle, he'll know those stopovers from LSC to Charl as well as anyone and just stay tuned to this thread.

All the best in planning it.

Hey John, (unkle buck)

The dancer looks very nice in the pics... I heard you decided to keep it with Ram for the winter.. he'll take good care of you.. let us know if/when you get over to Cedar Point.. Here's a thought, maybe you can slip in SLW's slip while they are away on the Charlevoix trip?? :) You'd have to stern in or change the name on the back since it's right across from the marina office.. I'm sure SLW won't charge too much for dock rental.. :)

Yup - nice looking boat, no doubt. She looks even better now, with black bottom paint. Not that you would know Ram, haven't you been on vacation for like a month?? :)

Ram, this comes from a guy who was in FLA most of December and 1/2 of January egh?? :)

well yeah, but I'm slipping. I'll only spend 1/3rd of February down there.

Buck is the real escape artist - I think he's forgotten what snow looks like.

SLW,

If you lived where Buck does, you'd want to escape too... for every inch of snow we get on our side of town, they get a foot.. :)

When are you headded back down???

19 days, 1 hour, 4 minutes. (just in time for the boat show on Feb 14th)
