"We're not really keen on running to Eluthra if we cannot make the Abacos. Things seem much more spread out in the southern bahamas and Freedom doesn't have much range if we have to push her."

You just jump from Bimini to Nassau, fuel up there as it is the cheapest fuel and supplies you'll see, then head to Eleuthera or the top of the Exumas. From Nassau to say Spanish Wells in Eleuthera is about 40 or so miles. From Nassau to Highborne Cay in the Exumas is about 35 miles. There is not much in the way of cruising grounds around Eleuthera. Other than Harbour Island. But there are tons of spots in the Exumas and they are very close together. And finding fuel and supplies should present no real problem.

I thought the idea was to avoid the winds against the stream yet the above forecast indicates little wave height difference between north and east winds.

Bruce- that is preciscely why we held back. Since there was a forcast change indicating a northern component during the day, we opted out.

Solar-
Indeed, the forcast has been tweeked back to the original. We're sort of wishing we left early this morning. I look at it this way, it's a trap waiting to spring :D. No harm, no foul. We wait a bit more and develop some more confidence. We have things we need to do anyway.

better safe than sorry.. but it is absolutely DEAD CALM this mornign in Miami...

Dan,

Are you going to the Abacos as well???

Don't miss it, Boat harbor, Green Turtle, Nippers, Hope Town, Albury's Boat shop.............

north winds are always expected behind a cold front with southerlies in front.

I dont understand the expectations for Bahamas weather in winter. Except for the gulf stream at the west the weather should be dominated by cold atlantic water and after a front the cold north wind would usually blow for a few days so Bahamas ought to be cold.

It seems to me that hanging around the Florida coast would keep folks in warmer weather than sitting near some low lying atlantic ocean islands.

Hi Jonathan, all things willing yes we are. We are sitting by in Palm Beach waiting for a good window. If we had a high zoot sporty, we would've done it today! We have many places we are trying to get to out there!

Pascal yes while we have not ventured far today (washing the boat down) it feels as though it would be a good day. Looking at the current data, the wind has shifted and we probably would have caught the tail end of the good water. Not that it's all that bad, it's the comfort factor.

Bruce-
Think clear water, not so crowded and different. Certainly it will probably be cooler than hanging in the keys but it's still better than a frozen river up north imho.

Given small craft warnings are up for the Gulf we feel better about waiting. They may be premature, but none the less, if we were delayed en-route, we might be sweating right now.

Tis better to sit at dock wishing you had gone, than sitting at sea, knowing you shouldn't have.

Edward I must be looking at that site every couple of hours :D. Hopefully the window doesn't compress.

Take from me, there are worse fates than to have to hang around Key Biscayne, Elliot Key, Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Bahia Honda, Newfound Harbor, et al til the winds die down. Or after, for that matter.

But, suit yourself!

George
Finally getting out of Thunderbolt tomorrow. Thanksgiving in Walburg Creek. Life is good. Really good.

George we're thinking less crowds at this point. Traditionally we have traveled off peak for a number of reasons.

That's Capt. Murrow to you. :-)

Looks like it should hold. Doesn't start to build a bit till sunday. And then it's only 10 - 15 out of the South.

Maybe crossing over to Nassau myself on sat. so I sure hope it does.

AM Station 810 broadcasts from Grand Bahama (Freeport). Wonder how accurate their weather reports are?????????
