Circle hooks VS 'J' Hooks. whaddayathink?

I'll let you know if we are going to venture that far from home. I dont imagine I'd wade out very far when fishing for sharks.
I think that's what those gigantic 12' beach casting rods are meant to do. Get your bait out where the Sharks eat, and not your legs!
 
12'??????? I use a 15' and still often wade out chest deep to cast. Of course I've caught them within a few feet of the shore. I just do it when the water is clear and the sun is well up. No low light or dirty water wading for sharks for this old man......
 
Have had good luck with circle hooks on sailfish, about 90% hookup.
Just caught couple of good sized Gruper and African Pompano using #5 circle hooks. Fish are almost always hooked in corner of mouth, easy to dehook. Havnt tried them on yellow-tail snapper.
 
Bill I was guessing when I said 12' I didnt think they made them any longer than 12'.

Sailfishing never turned my crank, but Grouper and Pompano would tempt me.
I may try that as a way to spend my Tax Re-fund here in America.

I've only heard of a few African Pompano being caught way up here on the northern gulf coast. In fact, I have never even seen one up here even while diving. However, we do get a pretty good pompano run each spring....they should start to show up in 3 or 4 weeks. When surf fishing for sharks in the spring I keep a pompano rig ready to cast when I see some coming by. I like the yellow or pink jigs tipped with a peice of shrimp for sight casting. After catching enough blues, ladyfish, or whatever, for shark baits I also re-rig my bait pole with a two hook dropper rig baited with sand fleas. It often picks up some nice pompano that I would not see to cast to. It can get a tad busy when a shrks picks up a bait while fighting a fish on one of the other rigs. Makes for a fun morning when I don't feel like taking the boat offshore, not to mention it's only a few hundred yard walk to the surf from the condo.
 
Bill, Caught African Pompano off the wrecks along with some Amberjack. Released the AJs but the Pompano are sure good eating.
Dropped live Pilchards down to bottom and reeled like hell when they bite. They sure will try to pull your rig into the wreck or a hole in the coral. The African Pompano are bigger than regular Pompano, makes some nice filets.

Well...wait a minit here Bill, If you dont have any Pompano, maybe I better find a Boat guy out Jmas or Perry's way that'l take me out for a share of all that Re-bate money?
 
Thud, you into the clear liquid today???? We generally don't have African Pompano, although they a sometimes caught off a wreck, but not in the numbers our south Fla. RO's find them. However, we do just fine on Florida pompano, in the surf.
 
Well, Honestly I dont know what a Pompano is.
I'll look it up though.

I went fishing twice out of Someplace on the West coast of Fl. Not far from Biloxi.
The most fun I ever had down in those clear waters was casting for those Blunt headed Dolphins. We used our Bass Rods and a Chartruse Chenelle 1/4 Oz jig.
They travel in flocks of Thousands.
We flattend the barb's and fished for a long time in a school of them. You get one every cast.
I could see the Green jig being pulled first one way, then another as the fish fought over it. Eventually one would get hooked.
We got two Grouper each off a wreck. I dont know which was better tasting but they were both great eating.
The guy running the boat was being careful about the limits. One shark per boat. Fine with me!

They're not in NY waters...I need to go south to find 'em. But we do get Dolphin offshore...
