clunking sound in engine

I have a 1998 Carver Mariner 350 with 454 EFI's and Walter V-Drive transmissions.I am hearing a clunking noise when I put the port engine in or out of gear. Has anyone else had this problem? Or what could be causing it?
 
shaft coupler loose, coupler loose on prop shaft
bent prop shaft, bent prop, loose cutlass bearing
damper plate springs broken
 
No Noise when engine is at idle, only when put in gear. Could this be something in the Walter V-drive or velvet transmission? Last weekend, it started clunking was we backed into our slip. I then shifted it several times with no noise. Then was we started to go out this weekend and I put it in gear, it started clunking everytime when put in gear.
 
since it is only one side there is something different. Have you listened near the engine while someone shifts? try to localize the source of the noise. Carefully inspect all engine mounts and shaft coupling bolts.

Look for something moving that should not be moving.
 
When you put in in gear , does it clunk just once with each shift, or continue to clunk. At 1st you indicated it would do it even when shifting out of gear then you emphasized going into gear. Does it really seem to do it shifting into neutral? That would be odder.

How confident are you it is in the engine?

Alien and Bruce compiled a very good list of potential suspects..

Adding loose prop nuts with prop backing off & fwd,... worn cutlass, loose shaft , rudder or tab anode , ... and
could there be something fouled in the prop or shaft hitting the hull?
Maybe even a thrust bearing in the transmission?
 
The clunking noise is constant when in gear at idle speed and increases when accelerating. Light clunking sound in forward (constant), louder in reverse (constant). Had boat pulled yesterday. Nothing on the prop or shaft. Looked OK. Had it power-washed and put back in water. Still clunks (no surprise). Engine runs great at idle or revved up, just not when put in gear. Fluid level in trans is good.
 
Curious, did you check the shaft connection to the v-drive? If any of the bolts are loose, you could get wobbling and clunking noise from the shaft moving about. Had that happen once, thankfully at dock and caught it before any damage.
