Anyone here in a local CGAux or PS. I'm very interested in joining, and would love some information.

I am a member of the Great South Bay Powered Squadron. The general web site is www.USPS.org Which is a good source of boating information. I highly recommend taking some courses.

Angelo Giovanniello was the past distract commander and can point you in the right direction if you wish to join the GSBPS. PM me and I will send you his business # where he can be reached.

A guy that used to be in my marina is in the power squadron... Boat name is Sound waves....

The short answer is no, I don't recall this boat name.

I am a card carrying member…. I am embarrassed to say that I have not attended any meetings but have taken some classes. Since I am busy with the LIYC functions, I have not gone to any of the BBQ’s and other functions so I only know a few people.

Each year when the LIYC does the VSC for all the boats in our marina Angelo always gives me the schedule on all the nice things they do. So I think is would be a great organization to be in if you have the time. Even if no time for meetings or functions, you receive nice literature and can tap into them at anytime you need to.

For the low yearly fee it is very worth it…

I was never a member of the Power squadron, But I was a member of the CG Aux at station Jones beach from 1996 to 2002.

Basically, as an auxillarist you can qualify as a crew member or coxswain and go out on patrols on members facilities. You can also get involved with boating education as an instructor or any number of other missions to support the local CG unit. Anything from vitrifying Aids to Navigation, station administration, cooking and watch standing to name a few.

You can also perform any job that a regular coastie does with the exception of carrying a fire arm. You can train and qualify as boat crew or even coxswain on the stations rescue boats. Train as watch stander and man the stations communications center or even qualify as Officer of the Deck.

It is very time consuming to qualify for many of the jobs as you have to pass the same tests the regular coasties take. But if you have the commitment and desire to learn, the members of the station are happy and willing to train you.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't give a r$ts ^$$ about my count! I saw no one had provided any info about the aux, so I provided a website that could lead him to his local aux. That's all. Been raining here all day and I was bored.

You need to look at the web sites provided for both PS and AUX and decide which is best for you. IMHO, the PS would be a good start since it seems you may be new to that kind of organization. I joined the Great South Bay PS and took the boating safety course which you can take w/o being a member and a couple of other i.e. navigation / plotting, weather.

The dues if I recall are around $85 a year. They have meetings which are not mandatory and many fun functions along with a full array of classes covering soup to nuts about boating.

Due to my current officer obligations at my YC and a good group of boating buddies, I have not attended meetings and functions, just not enough free time. But I receive lots of great literature in the mail. Also when I run into some of the members at various destinations on the bay they are very pleasant and welcoming. Of course they encourage coming to meetings and participating which is something members should do.

I basically keep my membership, just in case I would like to attend classes and also like receiving all the magazines in the mail.

The funny thing is, I pay a very small monthly membership fee to Bally’s gym which I joined for life years back, just in case I want to go. I have been saying that for over 7 years now. [:-indifferent]

South Shore Power Squadron is also in your area. Many of the members do their boating in the Merrick/Freeport area. The people are friendly and there are many raft-ups and other activities planned for the season. Meetings are not mandatory and are not scheduled during the Summer, when members would rather be out on the boat. The squadron does at least two cruises each year - one short one and one eleven-day cruise. This year the long cruise is to Newport Rhode Island with stops at Danfords' Inn in Port Jeff and the American Wharf in Connecticut. The short cruise is to Atlantic City and a district-wide weekend event will be held at Liberty Landing in New York Harbor.
