We have been on the lower CT River but we're thinking of keeping our boat at this marina this year. Change of scenery just.
Does any one here keep their boat there or can any one give some info about the area.

Thanks

Don't know anything about the marina, except that it is currently being actively marketed as for sale. May or may not factor into your plans.

I stayed there unexpectedly 2 years ago after needing their Yanmar mechanic for repairs.
First of all, Jim is an outstanding mechanic and extremely honest. His reputation is well know up and down the Hudson.
The owner felt so bad for my wife and I since we broke down, they allowed us to stay free of charge for 2 nights.

Read the reviews on Active Captain. Not a bad word to be said.

Another great marina about 1 mile south is Donovans Shady Harbor. We travel there every year and have never been disappointed. Great restaurant, ships store, and pool. The owners and marina help are fantastic. Again, read their reviews on Active Captain. I personally prefer this marina.

I don't comment on the forum much but wanted to say I can't recommend them highly enough. It is a family operation and I found myself there after hitting a rock in the Champlain canal on the way home to RI from a cruise to Canada. They could not have been more prompt, kind, or effective in getting my family and I back on our way. The owner lent us his truck to run local errands while we were staying on the hard. And our bill for a rush haul and repairs was low in my opinion. Not sure how a change of ownership might affect things. But my experience was excellent and I would keep my boat there if I were in the area.

I bought my Silverton 41 from them. Nice folks to do business with.
There's a restaurant on site, but not much else around.

KenK, send me an email and we can discuss your options. I am a disinterested party who has knowledge of the local area.

+1 for Shady Harbor. The folks at Coeymans are terrific and Jim is one of the most competent mechanics on the river. That said, the Donovans have turned Shady Harbor into a world-class facility that belies the area. They are longtime cruisers and have used their experience as serious boaters to create the kind of a place they'd want to visit with continuous upgrades and improvements. It's evident when you walk the grounds and the new docks. The pool and other amenities give it more of a resort destination feel, the ship's store is awesome and the restaurant/bar has one of the best views of any on the Hudson. I have friends happily going on their fourth season and I've been very impressed each time I've been there for a visit in the past few years. I rode out Irene there back in 2011 just after the Donovans had purchased the property and what they have accomplished since then is impressive.

As far as the area in general, it is certainly one of the most beautiful parts of the river. As is typical on much of the Hudson, your destinations will get quite repetitive unless you're willing to travel longer distances. There are some terrific anchorages as well as some fun activities throughout the season through the Mohawk Hudson Council of Yacht Clubs which has a group based out of Shady Harbor.

Shady Harbor Looks very nice - is there a breakwater there?

No breakwater and while you certainly will have the occasional idiot who will rock the marina, our experience and that of our friends who are there full-time is that the vast majority of boats respect the no-wake zone. It is generally not a high traffic part of the river and if rockin' and rollin' was an issue I know our friends who have been there for four years would not have stayed more than a few days. It is a narrow stretch and you really have to have a complete lack of awareness or general decency as a human being to not idle by. But then again, that's why I used the word "idiot." They DO exist. And yes Smitty, it is very nice. I organized a rendezvous there a few years ago for around a dozen boats and it was the perfect destination.

We have spent many nights and weeks on the Hudson mostly from Mills Norrie up to Catskill creek so we have very little knowledge above Catskill. Often we are at marina's but we have also anchored out at various points over the past. We have seen a 'bunch' of wakes anywhere from NYC all the way up to Catskill. Even behind the wave wall at Mills Norrie we had been rocked pretty well by both pleasure and commercial traffic especially when broadside to the channel.
Outside of Shady Harbor is the "NO Wake Zone" officially designated or is it signage erected locally?
