Columbus Day Regatta?

Just a warning to all you regatta virgins. If you are expecting to find the "Southern Baptist Convention" out there you clearly got the wrong impression.

I really want to go this year. Would be first time for me. Couple of questions for those who have been there.
1- Best way to go, out side or ICW?
2- Where and what to look for if arrive late Fri.? Probably leave Sunday afternoon.
3- Best area to anchor,34' boat + myself and couple of lady friends?.
1 or 2 Anchors?.
Sure would like to meet up with SFBC boaters.
I am a rookie at this, so would appreciate some tips.

I usefully go down the ICW. Seas always seem to kick up good just in time for the trip down. I tow the Whaler so I can’t do much over idle speed anyway.
Look for a lot of anchor lights looks like a city from all the lights. If it is still light you will see all the other boats. You won’t be the only boat going so there will be a couple dozen other boats all around you so just follow them. Make sure you know (chart) the featherbed banks area if it is after dark when you are going thru there. Law enforcement usually brings more markers and places them there.
Anchor out away from everyone else to get a feel of everything. I only use one anchor as you are going to swing as tide changes. Then move the next day if you so please if you don’t like your spot or want to get closer of farther away from the action.
I like to stay a little away from the crowd and take the dingy over myself. Lots of noise all night so if you want to get much sleep it is something to think about.

We've been to the "Canal Day" festival boat party in Chesapeake City, MD, so not much shocks us anymore.

Pascal, Any chance of visiting "JIMBO'S" while we are in miami area?. Is it out of the way?.

it's just off Gov cut... once you come in and bear to port on the south side of the port, it's right around the bend on the south side of fisher island.

my only concern woudl be getting in with a boat like yours, the channel is not marked, twists around and shallows on the side,

Pascal,
Thanks for info. Guess Ill check out Jimbo's by car some weekend.
Looking foward to seeing you at CDR.

what channel to reach SFBC boaters coming weekend?.
Hail on 16, go to ???.

dont' have time to listen to the VHF during CDR! :")

Joe -

I imagine Pascal's classic 53 Hatt is not too hard to spot, even amomgst 2000 boats. I'll let my crew decide. but I'm not sure if we will be in the midst of the crazy party, or out on the edge with the BE gang ... but we'll at least try to swing by and say hi to the BE gang.

Finally got the boat to Rickenbacker Marina today. We'll be arriving at CDR in the late morning.

Thought was to enable fellow south bound boaters traveling to CDR to get in touch if needed.

Maybe the best way to find the BE gang is whoever gets there first, put your Lat/Long here on BoaterEd ???

sorry if my reply was a little abrupt... wasnt' meant to be.. and VHF traffic is nuts during CDR anyway...

we'll be on the south side of the party, between University dock and the ranger station/docks. 1/2 mile from shore i guess... There should be 2 other classic Hatt. MY anchored nearby

I wouldn't give up on Jimbo's quite so easily. If the waters clear and the tides up a bit it's not hard to see your way in. Google Earth it.

My guess is it will be busy so you could follow some one in staying back a bit from them of course. It's really a treat to go there by water.

We are definitely going. Planning on leaving Hillsboro inlet early Sat AM and staying till late Sunday. The crew is really excited about this trip, They put plenty of drinking water and other beverages om board today. Leaving the beer up to me. Big ice machine at the dock.
We are fueled up and ready to go.
Thanks to all for your help and encouragement. See ya at the Party.

A couple crew had to jump ship, but three of us will be there.... the admiral, a co-worker, and myself. Look for the blue and white Four winns cuddy with one of the few sober drivers out there.

WOW! Arrived early Fri. and dropped the hook behind Pascals Yacht..
I sat on board coordinating phone calls with boating friends who made for Miami instead of Elliot Key, too many logistics involved to get them together
After a night of Pascals group of diversified music lovers till 2 am and with a noise generator that could have powered a full sized house which was left on all night.
I decided to meet with those friends Saturday in Miami and headed North.
One sight that I should pass on was the way the boats were rafted together 5 facing East and 5 facing West all Legal and Tender!
Pascal..You DO know how to Party!
Please post some pictures of your set-up as I think it was a Classic!

charles,

we looked for you... you must not have been anchored behind my boat because we arrived late Friday nigh, around 9 PM or so...

no noisy genset on this boat, inverter during the day and a marine diesel with side exhaust at night... can't hear it from 100' away. no loud music either, at least nothing that can be heard from 100' away.

no big raft up either, just joe (Jmas) .. it was great to see you Joe, been too long! and Glenn for a few hours on sat,

you got us confused... it's pretty low key on our boat! We always anchor out away from the madness and got there with the tender a few times.

great time though.. perfect weather, nice friends...
