Commentary on the Dalta Task Force recommendations

While her talk sounds good, I think it is all lip service to ease the passge of their process. If the Blue Ribbon Task Force(BRTF) is anything like the ones that are making decisions about the Marine Life Protection Act on our coastline, it is all bullship! They don't care about science, the fish or the people, they have a pre-ordained goal and will appear to make it an open transparent process all the while knowing what they are going to do. If the new preipheral canal passes, you can kiss the great Sacramento salmon run away and count on a lot less boating in our Delta.

If I sound bitter, take a few minutes to talk to some of the sport abalone divers on our northern coast. The BRTF totally ignored the best science, closed areas and have had an incredibly negative impact on the fishermen and divers up there. Arnmold got elected and sold us all down the road, he's going to continue to cater to the big agriculture busnesses and to ensure that his SoCal cronies have water. If they really wanted to do something to save our Delta, they would stop the water subsidies for thirsty crops being grown in arid regions. Residential water conservation will help but it is a drop in the bucket compared to agribusiness.

Dave said it exactly right!

Why do they NEVER mention decreasing the total amount of water exported?

Why isn't the focus on agri-biz conservation, or reduction? That's 85% of the water exported!

I'm not feeling well...

Instead of looking to The Delta for more water, how about thinking outside the box. Has anyone considered a desalinization plant? The Pacific Ocean has all the water anyone could need.

Maybe this has been considered and it was found to be too costly or inefficient, but this canal adventure sounds pretty costly as well. There are countries that rely on such plants for their water usage so why not here?

I agree with Dave [AbsoLoot]. This is a wolf in sheep's clothing! They will say it is for the ecosystem, but the bottom line is all decisions will be made to 1] improve the quality of water for EBMUD; and 2] to move more and more water to the south of the Delta. Do not be fooled!

Upper, San Diego has a desalinization plant on the drawing board. By the time they get water, the LA basin has polluted it so badly, San Diego can hardly use it. So they wanting to become water independent, thus the desalinization plant. We should force LA and other huge users of Delta water to install desalinization plants also.

Good discussion & just what I was looking for. It is easy to read commentaries like Ms. McPeak's & think "that sounds logical", but y'all have the deeper understanding of the situation. I'm beginning to "get it".

Missed your posts over the past several days, Flutter, hope all is OK.

Yes, everything is ok now.

I even managed to get down to the boat and install the winter curtains. It sure was windy and cold though! I had hoped to hang out in a quiet cove, but it was too windy to leave the slip. Maybe next time.......

Having left the Delta for Florida, it certainly is possible to use reverse osmosis (RO) to get fresh water. Cape Coral with a current populaton of over 165K does it, and moreover, reclaims other use water in a separate system to be used for irrigation water. It definitely can be done although my monthly water bill is over $70, compared to 25-30 when we lived in Sacramento and Roseville. Just a question of time and money.

Dugsboat,
Good point on price - raise it and force some conservation, and just like when the price of gas went up, we started to be able to "afford" those other technologies. Anybody know how efficient the desalinazation plants are these days?

Jim

Maybe a decade ago, I wrote to Hal Schell, at the B&D Yachtsman, asking the same question.

At that time, there was a $10 Billion bond, to do "stuff".

My point in a nutshell is, why don;t we make SoCal pay for that DeSal plant(s), using that money. THEY are the ones living in a desert, not us!

But there are too many ballots cast down there, so it's obvious...

Yup, you have hit the nail on the head Mitch! SoCal wants the entire state to pay for "their" water instead of having to foot the entire bill themselves. jerks
