I am interested in finding a boat in this catagory and would like some opinions on them. The Hatteras name tends to speak for itself but it seems that there are always issues with everything to some degree. I have always been concerned with balsa coring and I understand thet are solid bottom but have coring above and is this an issue in a 15+ year old boat. In looking them over they seem to be well thought out. Thank you

maybe repost this in ask the Captain

i'm not very familiar with these late 80s boats, you should ask on hatterasowners.com you can also find most of the sales brochures there...

hulls have always been solid fiberglass except for a handfull of sportfishes, i thnk in the earlier 80s and they quickly ended the experiment after 5 or 6 were built. Balsa above the water line is fine, even in decks although care must be taken when drilling holes. repairing limited core damage is no big deal, but if it has been ignored and spread it could be a costly issue. you can usually find this out yourself before survey by walking on the decks and taping around.

Hatteras is the only builder that has been cranking out quality boats since the early days of fiberglass and without interuption... they even have the blueprints for every boat they built.

another big plus with hatts are the fiberglass tanks that will never need replacing (except pre 84/85 gas boats because of ethanol).
