Just wondering I checked the compression on my 1988 two stroke 4 cylinder mercury outboard that came packaged with my searay and I got 105, 115, 100, and 105 lbs. Called my outboard mechanic and he said the discrepancy of 115 and 100 meant the motor was on it's way out. He said the motor was probably running very rough in idle but ran fine when I gunned it. And this is also true. My brother and I set the idle at 1200 rpm and it ran better. I asked him if it was worth fixing and the mechanic said no. He also has a 125 mercury 1999 outboard 2 cycle for sale he is willing to sell for 1200.00. It seemed like trying to fix my motor would cost more than buying the motor he was selling. He hasn't done a compression test yet he said that was going to do that and let me know before he would sell it to me. He said it ran fine and the previous owner upgraded to a 4 stroke. My questions are 1) Is the compression on my outboard really off? 2) if the compression checks out on his motor is a goo deal? THanks for any help.
