Condition of Ocean Parkway East of Jones Beach....

I had to drive out to Long Beach today and on the way back to the North Shore I took the Ocean Parkway to Saktikos parkway as I had done in the past. First time I had been down there since Sandy. East of Jones, it does not look bad till you go about 3 miles or so, then you can see the dunes are gone and if you go a bit further, the entire eastbound side is closed and the westbound side is divided east/west. After that point you see that the dunes that were on the beach, are on the road now. It looks like the surface of the moon. The ramps to Robert Moses Causeway north and south are both closed and you have to detour to Captree, make a U turn to go north. I have a hard time believing that the Ocean Parkway will be open for Memorial day.
 
After all of the accolades they bestowed on each other in the media in the days after the storm I would expect that our politicians would have it better than before in no time.
 
Looks like they're going to need an army of bulldozers to get this cleaned up....
 
Does anyone know if any of the 4x4 fishing beaches (Sore Thumb, Democrat)are open?
 
Robert Moses is closed so there is no access to Democrat Pt as far as I know.
 
Have to hand it to whoever designed the detour down there, well though out and executed. Unlike the dot blunder head who came up with the wantagh bridge and 95 corridor detours. Thoses were more like video games designed for maximum carnage. The ocean parkway detour is well lit at the crossovers with reflective stantions between the lanes for the entire length. Someone was even paying attention after going live. They saw people making the eastbound uturn instead of going to the captree traffic circle and put up stantions between those lanes.
 
Does anyone have any photos of the ocean parkway where the dunes are gone?
 
The roadway is all busted up in some places, they will have to repave it I suppose they will have to wait until it gets warmer in order to use blacktop. Also, the remaining roadway is somwhat wavy, weird how it wiped out some dunes yet left some places alone....
 
I think the plan is to use pre-cast concrete road sections that are made offsite so that they don't have to wait for things to warm up to pave. I'm not sure if that was finalized but prior Newsday articles mentioned that and I think the contracts were for the work to be completed by May 1st.

Those sections by Gilgo have had minimal dunes for years so not that surprising to see them mostly gone after Sandy.
 
I called the park office at RMSP about the access to Democrat Point (4x4). The person who I spoke to thought it would eventually be open this year. This is good news because that's my favorite place to go 4wheeling on the Island that is not too far away and the fishing ain't bad either. I was there last in September and it was beautiful. My old 98 Jeep can go anyhere when the tires are aired down to 10 psi....
 
Glad to hear it. Did they say anything about SoreThumb on the other side of the inlet? If I am not on the boat I am normally on the beach with the truck, either Demos or Sore Thumb. It would suck if that wasn't an option this year.
 
I didn't ask about Thumb but I will call again and see if they can give me some information. I'd rather not have to drive to Montauk State Park just to 4wheel but if I gotta then I gotta...got my son into it last year we had a blast at Demo....
 
There's 4-wheel access in Hampton Bays (West side of Shinnecock Inlet). There are vehicles on the beach everyday. I'm not sure if the park is open for beach access on the east side of the inlet.
 
Anyone have any updates? The season is closing in on us.
 
Was on oceanparkway last night. Trucks working round the clock to restore beaches. Itll be a while. Theres a lot to clean up
 
I was over there last week picking up the 4X4 permit. Lots of work being done... lots of work that still needs to be done. They entrance to Sore Thumb looks good but was blocked off.

I was down there today driving back from Long Beach to the North Shore.As noted above, a lot of work was done rebuilding dunes, but a lot still needs to be done. It's interesting to see how the dunes were wiped out in some areas and not in others. Lots of heavy equipment there so I'm hopeful it will be in decent shape by summer. Most of the road, on the ocean side, looks surprisingly good. They seem to be doing some work to the causeway where it passes over the ocean parkway.
 
Was down there this morning. Angry looking ocean that looked very close in quite a few spots. Really high tide in bay had most of the marshlands covered and
Just north of ocean pkwy on wantagh had 2 lanes flooded out. The wall of sand they have built looks pretty cool too.
Troopers pulling cars over last week for not dropping their speed from 55 to 35 fast enough, really? (not me thankfully)
