Connecticut boateres about to get Tax-whacked

A few comments:

• Impose sales tax on a trade-in when someone buys a newer boat. – Strange…then they charge sales tax a second time when the trade-in is sold?
• Impose sales tax on winter storage of a boat. – We pay in NJ
• Impose sales tax on repair and maintenance labor on a boat. – We pay in NJ
• Permit municipalities to impose the property tax of 20 mills on a boat - Could never understand this concept…property tax on non-real estate. Why would anyone want to buy anything? In NJ, we do not do it, but I understand PA does…at least on cars
• Impose a "luxury tax" of 3 percent on the value of a boat purchase above $100,000 in addition to a proposed 6.35 percent sales tax. - Luxury tax failed when the feds did it. We pay 7% sales on new and used in NJ

The CT boating industry will die. Then they will collect NO tax from boaters, and collect no tax from the businesses that fail.

Another Democrat at work...

I predict a lot more CT boaters will be paying for services with envelopes of cash than do so today.

The Derecktor yard in Bridgeport which builds and repairs big boats - you might have read about "Cakewalk" the biggest yacht built in America in years (maybe ever) - will shut down. And Bridgeport is not exactly and economic powerhouse as it is.

I just received this from my dealer -- sounds like the boaters prevailed!

Dear Fellow Boaters:

I am very happy to inform you that the new Connecticut State Budget passed by the House and Senate last week, did not contain a property tax on boats, nor did they impose a tax on labor and winter storage. The sales tax credit for trades will remain in effect.

If not for the tireless efforts of the boaters of Connecticut contacting their law makers, these new taxes would have certainly been included. We understand the harsh reality of our economic times, but are gratified that the boaters of Connecticut will not have to carry the burden of such heavy taxes.

Thank you for all of your support and we hope you have a fun and safe boating season.

Sincerely,

Robert Petzold, Vice President
Petzolds Marine Center

That's great to hear. Kudos to all who kept fighting the battle.
