I'm posting this for a friend in the next slip. Hoping to figure out why his prop hubs are slipping.

It's a 1989 30 Sundancer, Mercruiser 350 small blocks with Alpha 1, Generation 1. Props are currently aluminum, size 14.5 X 17

Could these props be wrong and incorrectly propped for this make and model?

Any information and help to pass along is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

he may need to have the hubs replaced. They do dry out and need to be replaced from time to time.

I think I have it now... according to SR, the props should be 14 X 19.

I'll pass that along to him.

Thanks.

I would not trust the prop choice to SR. That's the same folks that equipped the 330 with everything from 16 squared to 17x15's on the 330's with the same engine configuration.

I have the same boat and when purchased, it had 14 x 19 aluminum props. That was over propped for my boat/engines. WOT range is 4400 to 4600 RPM. Ideally, you'd want to be able to obtain between 4500 and 4600 RPM at WOT. I'm currently running 14 1/2 x 17 aluminum and run closer to the 4400 RPM number. I could probably still stand to trim a little off the diameter. Determine what kind of performance you have with your current prop and adjust from there.

I have that exact boat. The 14x19s are a good choice (aluminum) and are original spec. What's he running for WOT and how loaded, what conditions, etc?

Okay, he's staying with the 14.5X17 props but going with new SS props. He's aware of the speed vs. getting out of the hole issue and enjoys the boat with the current sized props. Evidently, it's a size that many are using on the exact same boat...

Thanks for the help guys!

Switching to SST props will make a significant difference to performance. I think it's something like the equivalent of a 2" pitch increase vs. aluminum.
