Crime in nassau getting worst

There has always been an issue with crime in nassau with tourists attacked sometimes in daylight.

In the past year a new disturbing trend has emerged with attacks on female tourists riding jet skis. While there is a debate in Nassau on whether these attacks have been committed by Jet Ski rental staff, the U.S. embassy has now banned its employees from renting PWCs and advised visitors not to rent either.

What is troubling is the use of PWCs and I have to wonder how long it will be before criminals in Nassau start using PWCs to attack anchored boats. Fast, nimble, hard to see and capable of running in shallow water...

I used to anchor overnight outside the harbor by Rose or Athol island feeling it was a safer spot, now I wonder
 
Over population, no jobs, a lack of police, and corruption spell disaster for the Bahamas in general. Many restaurants and marinas have been hit hard on Elbow Cay. This is not just Nassau. The crime is more harsh there, but they are armed and dangerous everywhere.
 
Have been going to the islands for over 25 yrs. This past summer is most likely my last trip. While most people are great, there are enough trouble makers to make me rethink. It just takes a couple of bad apples to ruin the whole batch. It seems that the government of the Bahamas is content with the decline (not unlike some of the events within the US, sadly!!!). The Bahamas can be a great place to cruise, I do however suggest that people travel with other boats. And be prepared for what ever.
 
The notion that the government would let the harbor across from Atlantis turn into a cesspool says it all.
 
It s unfair and very inaccurate to lump the bahamas in a one size fit all deal which is why i said Nasssau in teh thread title. Probably true for freeport too but htats about it.

We spend probably three month a year in the exumas and there are no issue there beyond the occasional tender / outboard theft in gtown but that haooens just about everywhre...never had an issue in the exumas, incl. gtown, the berrys, etc... We were in gtown last year during the family island regatta with large crowds and felt very safe.

Nassau is just nassau, not worth more than an overnigh stop to re provision. The exumas are still the exumas.
 
5 documented attacks since July 2014. Based on how many people rent jet skis every year in Nassau, I'm guessing that is statistically a pretty low number.

Nassau has for a long, long time been a place where you need to be aware of your surroundings and not do stupid things. But if you use some common sense and don't walk around like a drunken tourist it's a great place to get fuel, food, drink, parts & supplies, etc.

And I have to say, knock on wood, in the decades I've been going there I've never had a bad experience and met some great locals who have been a big help at times.

That said, I'll still choose to spend the majority of my time in the Bahamas on Eleuthera when I'm not on a boat and in the Exumas and Southern Bahamas when I am on a boat. :-)
 
Absolutely true Bill. What worries me though is the use of jet skis and it s only a matter of time till it anchored boats are hit.

That said, authorities may be taking this seriously as the RBDF now patrols the area with jet skis.
 
Pascal the classification may be unfair, but armed robbery is on the rise in the Abacos. Additionally while we feel safe here, it used to be we could walk the roads without concern. Now, there is quite a bit more traffic as the development continues and more people are on island.
As I said it is worse in Nassau, but crime is on the rise in the Abacos. We've seen and met security guards where and when we never used to.
We're still waiting for the shanty towns to get cleaned up.

I will say provisioning is far cheaper in Georgetown than in Marsh. No one knows why but I suspect some gouging is occurring because of the proximity to Bakers and all of the gated high end communities.
 
Provisioning in gtown is very limited though especially meat. Fruits and veggies are hit or miss too, all deoending on mail boat schedule

Didn't known crime was on the rise in the abacos. What a shame.
