What is the purpose CH5VW vented pump plug?
How is it supposed to work?

Twice now, little nylon plug, little rubber stopper and washer have come out of the screw in cap

Best way to stop this?

Have you tried replacing the part CH5VW? I think it allows air into the pump impeller to keep it from locking up (air BOUND).

When you say 2 years old do you mean the head or the CH5VW valve assembly?
I wish Vic William was around he would know the answer.

That part holds the spring and ball in place. And it acts as a stop for the check ball. If it keeps popping out you need to look at the condition of the threads where it screws in I would think.
 
It's not the actual stop but what's in it.
There is a nylon bushing of sorts, then a little rubber plug, then a very small washer.
When I reinsert it goes as follows:
Little washer, rubber plug, then the bushing.

This time I coated the outside of the bushing with silicone sealant before reinserting it back into the stop.
I then put silicone in the hole to keep rubber plug and washer from popping out again.
