Folks I am wondering if anyone can give me a time estimate to transit from Lock 7 down to NYC? I am picking up a new boat (Cruisers 4450) and am unfamiliar with the Hudson though I do have charts, plotter chips and some very experienced boaters. Can anyone give me some estimates and is there anything I should be watching for? Thanks!

I did similar trip in two days in July. Stayed at Crescent City Yacht Club, between locks 7 and 6. Next morning, down Waterford flight and Hudson to Kingston, Rondout Creek. Second day Kingston to Jersey City. This was at a max speed of 7 mph on starboard engine alone, as port transmission had failed. Trip is in the 150 mile range, so figure on 75 miles per day. Speed limit on east end of Erie Canal will keep you slow, but you can make up time on the Hudson if you are capable of a better speed than I was. At my speed these were 11 to 12 hour days to cover the distance required. Adjust these times for your cruising endurance and your boat's capabilities.

Safe and Happy Boating!

We've done both legs of this many times. Stay in the channel and you will have no problems. Just keep your eyes peeled for debris! When lock doors open you never know what you will find and we have thumped a few things in the erie.
We would expect you are going to be cruising at 17+ on the river. Given that two days to Liberty Landing is reasonable. Start early and with luck you should be through the last lock in time to run to kgn at speed. With your boat chugging along, I'd say you are looking at 4+ hours of river time to Kgn.. There are only a couple of no wake areas along the way, including Ravena Coeymans, and Shady Harbor. The Rondout Yacht Basin in Kgn is a good stop, so is the town dock. At the Kgn town dock you have plenty of dining to choose from.

Thanks folks I expect to be cruising if no wake and no traffic at around 24 knots so hopefully can cut some time out. I was hoping to do a 1 day trip to NYC and then overnight and do the last 4 hours to Longport NJ just below Atlantic City which is my home marina. So you feel that I probably won't make NYC in 1 day but it will require 2 huh?

I ran from Lincoln Harbor (5 miles north of LIberty) to lock 12 in 2 days, with a 7knt cruise. Ran back in the same 2 days.

I had some routes on my laptop and using Nobeltec it looks as though you are in for about 5 hours from the Troy lock to Liberty Landing. According to these routes it's about 35 miles to Kgn from the lock and about 79 from Kgn to Liblanding.
As always, your mileage may vary. But it looks as though it's certainly possible to run from the flight to Lib landing. However, I'd say yer gonna be toast at the end of that day. As an alternative consider running to the Tarrytown marina just north of the Tapanzee bridge. The Striped Bass Restaurant is good, and the marina is relatively protected. You should be able to run to jersey from there I would think.
Just remember to take your time in the locks, and don't get bent out of shape if you hit delays in them. The federal lock in Troy is known for waiting until the lock fills with boats. Given all of that, I'd say you are looking at roughly 10 hours to Lib Landing. One other thought, the amount of stop and inspect by the L.E.s is going up dramatically on the river and in NY harbor.

Well we did the run and it was extremely fun. First we ran from Schnectady Yacht Club through the locks to Troy in 3 hours. The bad part was we didn't start until 6:30 Friday evening and completed it at 9:30 at night in the dark. We pulled up to the marina in Troy where we stayed overnight. Next morning at 6:00 we started the run to NJ. With the no wakes and such we arrived at Liberty Landing around 12:45. We then fueled up again took a quick lunch and headed out underneath the Verrazano towards Atlantic City. With the wind blowing and a extremely sloppy sea with waves averaging 4-6 we took 5 hours to get to Longport, NJ our home harbor. So total trip time was around 15 hours of running but we definitely were beat at the end. I have to say I really have respect for Cruisers Yachts as my new 4450 ran like a champ with no issues at all. To all thanks for the advice and it was a great trip!

Glad you had a fun trip! You made out pretty well in the locks considering your late start...

We're glad to hear it went smoothly! Wow, I was within 15 minutes to Liberty Landing.

Yes we were lucky with the locks as they pretty much lined then up for us from 5 on and we had no wait as we were the only boat. Was intersting that the Troy (Fed)lock had no ropes to hold on to. We found the locks to be a very neat experience and I hope to take my kids thru at some time in the future.
