Ct River to West Sayville ?

Hello new neighbors:
My boat is finally ready to bring to its new home in West Sayville and I am reviewing the charts and wondering what is the best route for a "newby" to the area. How navigable is Shinnecock canal ? Locks are not an issue, I've done the St Lawrence and Champlain canal system before...
The canal would make the ride more enjoyable rather than going around Montauk.

Which inlet is safer to get "inside" the bay ? Fire Island or Moriches ? Moriches looks a little shallow and I have read all of the warnings, Yikes. I draw 3' with a 14' Beam.
 
If you're going through shinnecock you will not need an inlet.

Just stay inside the whole way to Sayville. Try to time your run so you're hitting Moriches at high tide. There is alot of info on the run here, I think even in the sticky's.

If you do it on a weekend. You'll probably pick up a large boat are 2 that you can follow from the inlet through moriches (if you trust them )
 
Canal is easy if timed right. You looking for the locks to be closed or slack.
High tide in peconic and low tide in shinnecock is bad!
If ocean conditions are good, I would run around Montauk and come in Fire Island inlet.
Try to hit FI inlet at high tide, then run to west channel, then to north channel and your home free.
Moriches inlet is ok, but if wind is out of south or east, it can be trouble. West wind is preferred but that would mean you had a headwind in the ocean the whole way.
After Moriches inlet there is one tricky spot, but easy if you can see the buoys and the fishing guys ain't blocking them!

I was thinking about outside the whole way as well. I am gathering all of the info I can so I have a Plan A, B and C......
 
According to Vic, the bouys are in the correct places in moriches (http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=146995).
 
It's a beamy boat.
Outside is best bet for a no hassle run.
Moriches is not fun if you have never done it before.
Again, I would base the final decision on wind and sea conditions.
 
Tom - Montauk is the way to go for this trip. Nice Striper fishing along the way around the corner.
 
If you want to run the inside and are a member of Sea Tow, they will escort you through Moriches.
 
You can decide on the trip across...if its too lumpy then cut inside the Peconics and come thru the canal and stay inside the whole way or continue on past Montauk and you can duck into Shinnecock if conditions are not favorable. If you come in thru Moriches take the west cut and follow the bouys. Plenty of water on that side. The trip will be longer on the inside but more things to look at along the way.
Safe trip...advise if you come thru Shinnecock...I can walk/guide you thru this area.
 
I will say that if you are new to traversing inlets try to time it for incoming water. If you try to pass with outgoing water and if there's a SW wind, you can get stacked conditions which can be formidable for a seasoned let alone a new to the area boater.
